Mexican Peso Rebounds from Two-Year Low Amid U.S. Election Uncertainty

The Mexican peso started the week on a positive note, gaining ground against the U.S. dollar. This rebound comes after the peso hit its lowest point in over two years. The currency market is adjusting positions as the U.S. presidential election approaches.

The spot exchange rate stands at 20.0730 pesos per dollar. Compared to Friday’s official Banco de México (Banxico) closing rate of 20.2768, the peso has gained 20.38 cents or 1 percent. The dollar price fluctuates between a high of 20.1714 pesos and a low of 20.0179 pesos.

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against six major currencies, is down 0.58% at 103.67 points. This decline in the dollar’s strength contributes to the peso’s recovery. The Mexican currency had depreciated to 20.2980 per dollar on Friday, a level not seen since September 2022.

Investors are closely watching the U.S. election polls, which show a tight race between the candidates. There are concerns about potential protectionist measures if former President Donald Trump wins. His previous threats of tariffs on Mexican products worry market participants.

After Tuesday’s election, investors will focus on the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision. Interest rate futures largely anticipate a 25 basis point cut. This expectation is influencing currency movements across the board.

On the domestic front, Mexico will release its October inflation report on the same day. This data will be crucial for determining the future of interest rates in Mexico. Despite ongoing uncertainties, the peso is currently one of the best-performing currencies globally.

However, analysts caution that the peso trading above 20 per dollar indicates persistent upward risks for the exchange rate. The currency market remains volatile as it navigates through these significant economic and political events.
