What Macabro 2026 Brings to Mexico City

Macabro has grown from a niche gathering into one of Latin America’s most anticipated genre festivals. The 25th edition marks a deliberate expansion beyond cinema into interactive and digital storytelling.

Organisers have confirmed a fully in-person format with complementary online streaming via the platform nuestrocine.mx. Entry to the general programme and most marquee events remains free, a policy that has helped Macabro build a loyal and diverse audience over two and a half decades.

The Competitive Sections and Awards at Macabro 2026

Three feature film competitions anchor the festival: International Horror, Ibero-American Horror, and Dark Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Short film categories cover Mexican horror, international horror, and animated horror.

Winners receive statuettes named after minerals and colours tied to Macabro’s identity. The Macabro Rojo goes to the best international and Ibero-American features, while the Macabro de Jade, Ónix, and Zafiro recognise the best Mexican, international, and animated shorts respectively.

A new Daimon Distribution Award will offer theatrical distribution in Mexico for the winning title. A separate Daimon mention provides distribution consultancy for Mexican productions from the 2025–2026 cycle.

Confirmed Short Films Span 13 Countries

Infobae has published a substantial portion of the short film lineup. The Mexican horror selection includes 17 titles such as MemoNeura, Cuando miras en los ojos de la bestia, Bloody Glamping, and Ofrenda.

The international strand features 23 shorts from 13 countries. Entries come from the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Canada, England, Colombia, Australia, the Netherlands, France, and Venezuela.

The animated horror selection lists 24 titles, nine of which carry backing from Mexico’s FOCINE and PROCINE film funds. The full animated roster will appear in the official programme closer to opening day.

Venues Across the Capital

Macabro 2026 will use 20 venues, blending major institutions with community cultural centres. The Cineteca Nacional México, Cineteca Nacional de las Artes, Casa del Cine, and Cinematógrafo del Chopo are among the confirmed screening sites.

The Biblioteca Vasconcelos, FARO de Oriente, FARO Cosmos, and the Museo Casa de Carranza will host specialised events. The Centro de Cultura Digital takes the AI day, while nuestrocine.mx handles online access for viewers across Mexico.

El Heladero Premiere and Special Programmes

Diamond Films presents the festival premiere of El Heladero, a horror feature starring Ari Millen, Benjamin Byron Davis, and Eli Roth. The story follows a summer town unravelling after an ice cream man distributes treats with terrifying consequences.

Invitations for the free screening will be distributed through Macabro’s social media channels. The film is expected to be one of the highest-profile events of the 25th edition.

True Crime Night Debuts at Museo Casa de Carranza

For the first time, Macabro will host a True Crime Night on 18 August. The programme explores documentary cinema about real criminal cases and their hold on audiences.

The flagship film is Altona, created by the award-winning Affolter brothers. It combines animation with live testimonies to examine the aftermath of a lethal attack on a community and the survivor confronting his own demons.

AI Day and Gaming Expand the Festival’s Reach

Macabro 2026 dedicates 20 August to artificial intelligence in cinema at the Centro de Cultura Digital. Spanish filmmaker José Texeira will lead a masterclass on AI-driven horror storytelling.

Screenings include Memoria Lacerada, the second AI-made film by Mexican director Lex Ortega, and the short Margoth et Kassandra by León Landazuri. Both entries signal growing Latin American experimentation with generative tools in genre filmmaking.

The festival also enters the gaming space for the first time. In partnership with the Feria Geek, Macabro will present eight independent horror video game projects, reaching audiences beyond traditional cinema.

What Macabro 2026 Means for Mexico City’s Cultural Economy

Free-admission festivals like Macabro generate foot traffic across multiple neighbourhoods and cultural venues. The 20-venue spread pushes visitors into spaces such as FARO de Oriente and FARO Cosmos, which sit outside the city’s central tourist corridor.

For investors and expats tracking Mexico’s creative industries, Macabro’s expansion into AI and gaming reflects broader convergence trends in Latin American media. The involvement of FOCINE and PROCINE in funding animated shorts also signals continued public-sector support for genre filmmaking.

The Daimon Distribution Award adds a commercial layer. By offering theatrical distribution to the winning title, the festival bridges the gap between festival exposure and box-office viability, a persistent challenge for independent horror in Latin America.
