Lula affirms that Brazil will achieve the goal of ending deforestation by 2030

The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, affirmed yesterday that the country will meet the goal of reducing deforestation in the Amazon to zero by 2030. However, he acknowledged that it would not be easy.

At an event commemorating his first 100 days in office, Lula affirmed that “we will comply with the agreements signed and reduce deforestation in the Amazon rainforest to zero by 2030”.

The Brazilian president explained that the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, continues to rebuild the environmental policy dismantled under the previous government and also stated that the federal government will combat deforestation in all the country’s biomes and that the shift to a low-carbon economy will be a strategy for development.

Since becoming President, Lula has reiterated on several occasions that the fight against climate change and the preservation of the environment will be two flags of his term of office.

Despite increasing the control in the Amazon and the pressure on illegal mineral hunters and people who destroy the largest rainforest in the world, the numbers still do not reflect the government’s efforts.

In February, deforestation in the Amazon was a record for the month, with 322 square kilometers.

In March, 356 square kilometers of forest were lost, the third worst record for the month, according to data from the National Institute of Space Research (Inpe).
