For two weeks every June, Lima turns its parks and plazas into open-air stages and lets anyone walk in for free. This is your guide to the Fiesta de la Música, the citywide music festival that opens today, June 13, and runs through June 27 across sixteen districts of the capital.

Fiesta de la Música: a free festival opens today

The Fiesta de la Música is Lima’s edition of an idea born in Paris in 1982, when France turned the summer solstice into a day when anyone could play music in the street. Four decades on it is staged in more than 120 countries, and Lima has made it a fixture of the southern winter.

This year the capital’s programme opens on June 13 and runs to June 27, with free concerts spread across the city rather than penned into a single venue. The line-up mixes Peruvian bands with international guests, and almost everything is open to the public at no cost.

Where to find the music: 16 districts, ~40 stages

The festival’s whole character is that it comes to you. Roughly forty stages are scattered across sixteen districts, including the bar-lined streets of Barranco, the parks of Miraflores and residential Surco, so most residents will find a set within easy reach.

Programmes shift by day and by neighbourhood, covering rock, fusion, electronic, jazz and Andean and Afro-Peruvian sounds. The simplest approach is to pick a district for the evening, check that day’s stages, and let the night unfold from there.

The big night: R-Wan at Parque Kennedy, June 20

The centrepiece is a free concert on Saturday June 20 at Parque Kennedy in Miraflores, the leafy square at the heart of the district. French artist R-Wan headlines, with Peruvian names including Pelo Madueno on the bill.

Expect a crowd: Parque Kennedy is busy on any weekend, and a free headline show in the middle of the festival draws families and night-owls alike. Arrive early if you want to be near the stage, and travel light.

A national festival, and how to plan your nights

Lima is the largest stage but not the only one. Nationwide the Fiesta de la Música reaches seventeen Peruvian cities and runs as late as July 7, so travellers heading to Cusco, Arequipa or the north may catch their own free programmes.

For a smooth night out, confirm each day’s line-up and start times through the organisers’ channels before you set off, since open-air schedules can move. Carry small cash for food stalls, use a registered taxi or the Metropolitano after dark, and keep phones and bags close in the crowd.
