Key Facts

  • Wall Street surged on a risk-on wave, pushing the S&P 500 up 1.48% and the Nasdaq 2.13%, with the VIX fear gauge slipping to 15.86, setting a firm floor for Latin American risk assets.
  • The dollar index is hugging the 100 floor, with the DXY at 100.011, giving the Brazilian real, Chilean peso, and Mexican peso breathing room as traders price in a softer US rates outlook.
  • Gold punched through $4,066/oz, and silver gained 0.81% to $58.261/oz, signalling that the metals complex is in a holding pattern hunting for the next macro catalyst.
  • Mexico’s consumer confidence reading lands today with the consensus at 44.1, while gross fixed investment data arrives tomorrow, keeping the peso and the Mexbol index sensitive to the nation’s domestic demand story.
  • The Colombian monetary policy minutes drop late offering a crucial window into BanRep’s thinking after the prior export data showed a sharp cooldown, with the COLCAP index already down 0.31% overnight.

Today’s Focus

The overnight tape is a story of two distinct impulses: a powerful tech-driven risk rally on Wall Street meets a cautious Latin American pause. With the S&P 500 closing at 7,600—a whisker from its all-time high—and the VIX melting to 15.86, global investors are clearly reaching for risk. But the local boards in São Paulo, Mexico City, and Bogotá barely budged, suggesting that dedicated emerging-market money is holding fire before a torrent of regional data.

The gravitational centre of the day is unquestionably Brazil’s Selic decision at 21:30 local time. The central bank, led by Gabriel Galípolo, must navigate between a sticky inflation print of 4.72% in May—well above the 4.5% ceiling—and an economy that will show its pulse via PMIs and industrial production this morning. A pause at 14.25% or a dovish cut will swing the real and the rate-sensitive B3 shares instantly.

Elsewhere, the setup is equally loaded. Mexico reports consumer confidence and investment figures that will test the resilience of the ‘nearshoring’ narrative driving the peso. Colombia’s late-night monetary policy minutes will be scoured for clues on how the board interprets the cooling export figures. Against this, the dollar’s softness—the DXY barely holding 100.011—is the tide that quietly lifts all Latam currency boats.

What matters today. Whether the Copom signals a pause tonight—any hint of stopping the easing cycle will reprice the Brazilian curve and the real immediately.

01 The overnight tape in one read

Ibovespa (B3) daily candlestick chart

Risk-taking was the only game in New York on Monday. The Nasdaq Composite charged 2.13% higher to 25,914, while the broader S&P 500 added 1.48% to close at 7,600, leaving it virtually flat against its 52-week high. The bond market bought into the optimism too: the US 10-year yield fell 1.29% to 4.679%, a move that ripples directly through to how global investors price the long end of the Brazilian curve.

Commodity markets added to the constructive tone. Gold rose 0.57% to $4,066 an ounce and silver outpaced it with a 0.81% gain to $58.261, suggesting real-money buyers are comfortable holding hard assets into a week of heavy US services data. The dollar index sat almost perfectly flat at 100.011, barely changed, which is a green light for carry trades in higher-yielding Latin American currencies.

Assessment — Cautiously positioned pre-data MEDIUM

The evidence is mixed: US risk-on momentum is potent and the soft dollar is a tailwind, but the domestic data calendar is heavy with risk. The Brazilian real’s mild weakness at 5.0882 and the flat Ibovespa close despite a soaring Nasdaq tells you the market is already hedging for a hawkish Copom surprise. The variable to watch is the Brazil services PMI at 13:00—a print above 51.3 could harden bets on a Selic hold and send the real and mid-cap stocks lower.

02 The board before the open

Instrument Level Change Read
S&P 500 7,600 +1.48% Knocking on the door of its 52-week high of 7,610
Nasdaq 25,914 +2.13% Big tech roared back; the VIX slipped to 15.86
US 10Y Yield 4.679% −1.29% Bond bulls are betting that the Fed is closer to done
Gold $4,066 +0.57% Safe-haven buying meets a flat dollar
DXY 100.011 +0.10% The dollar is essentially unchanged, a boon for EM FX

This board is a rare sight: a roaring equity rally combined with a sliding bond yield and a flat dollar. That combination usually screams ‘risk-on’ for emerging markets, yet Latin America’s local benchmarks barely acknowledged it. The Ibovespa sat dead flat, the Mexbol slipped 0.36%, and the Merval in Buenos Aires gave back 0.51%, hinting that local narratives are overriding the global tailwind.

The gold and silver moves are worth unpacking. At $4,066, gold is not just a fear trade—it is also a direct bet on a lower real yield environment, which should, in theory, make Brazilian dividend stocks and Mexican mining shares look more attractive once the local event risk clears.

03 What the data shows — Brazil’s market drifted sideways, masking a fierce stock-level rotation

Stock Move Turnover Note
VALE3 R$1,758m The volume king; flat close but the real action is in iron ore futures today
PETR4 R$1,050m Petrobras preferred stock heavy turnover, awaiting oil’s next move
AZEV4 +18.7% R$20m Azevedo & Travassos surged on local speculative flow, thin volume
CSNA3 −6.8% R$153m Siderúrgica Nacional slammed; steel margin fears bite hard
PRIO3 −3.9% R$413m Prio oil company retreating; heavy turnover signals institutional selling

While the headline Ibovespa index was a ghost at 178,000, unchanged on the session, the underbelly of Brazil’s market was a battlefield. Mining titan Vale (VALE3) and oil giant Petrobras (PETR4) together churned through R$2.8 billion in turnover, effectively anchoring the index. But the real story was the brutal rotation out of commodity cyclicals: steelmaker CSN (CSNA3) fell 6.8% on R$153 million in turnover, while independent oil producer Prio (PRIO3) dropped 3.9% with a chunky R$413 million changing hands.

The speculative energy was concentrated in a handful of small-cap names. Builder Azevedo & Travassos (AZEV4) rocketed 18.7% on just R$20 million in volume—a classic thin-market move that says more about local momentum traders than any fundamental shift. This split personality, with big money selling resources and retail chasing tiny builders, is a market waiting for a macro signal to pick a unified direction.

04 Brazil and the currencies

The Brazilian real weakened a touch to 5.0882 per dollar, a 0.25% slip that kept it squarely in the middle of its recent range. That is remarkable given the pressure cooker the central bank is sitting in. The Copom enters its second day of deliberations with inflation at 4.72%—breaching the 4.5% ceiling—while the IPCA-Fipe inflation gauge this morning, expected at 0.4%, will give one last data point before the decision.

The real could snap sharply either way. A hawkish hold or even a hint that the easing cycle from 14.25% is ending would draw in the yield-hungry carry trade and push USD/BRL back towards the 5.00 mark. Conversely, a dovish cut or a statement that downplays the inflation overshoot would likely send the real towards 5.15 as the rate advantage erodes. The services PMI at 13:00 is the tripwire: a figure above 51.3 would suggest an economy still running too hot for comfort.

Across the region, the FX picture is remarkably calm. The Mexican peso was virtually flat at 17.3395, showing zero anxiety ahead of today’s consumer confidence print. The Chilean peso was the overperformer, with USD/CLP dropping 0.60% to 925.48, perhaps catching a bid from the copper price. The Argentine peso continued its managed slide to 1,494 per dollar, while Colombia’s peso eased 0.37% to 3,134 as traders brace for the monetary policy minutes.

05 The regional setup

Index Country Change
Ibovespa Brazil +0.00%
S&P/BMV IPC Mexico −0.36%
IPSA Chile +0.30%
S&P Merval Argentina −0.51%
COLCAP Colombia −0.31%

Santiago’s IPSA was the lone gainer among the five major Latin American boards, adding 0.30%, likely buoyed by the soft dollar and hopes that China’s economic signals will lift copper demand. Mexico’s IPC slipped 0.36% to 66,697, a modest retreat that leaves the index down 6.8% from its 52-week high—a pocket of underperformance that may attract value hunters if today’s consumer confidence data exceeds the 44.1 estimate.

Argentina’s Merval dropped 0.51% to 3,274,443, though in a market where the local currency is depreciating at a managed pace, nominal index moves are less meaningful than the underlying dollar-adjusted picture. Colombia’s COLCAP edged 0.31% lower as the market waits for tonight’s monetary policy minutes from BanRep to gauge whether the 12% export reading reported yesterday is ringing alarm bells in the boardroom.

06 The technical picture

The Ibovespa at 178,000 sits in a painful technical spot: it is 10.4% below its 52-week high of 198,657, yet it has not broken down to test the lower end of its range at 132,437. The index has strung together three consecutive flat-to-positive sessions, but without conviction. That kind of sideways drift in the middle of a wide range is a classic compression pattern—it will not last.

The Mexican IPC is technically more interesting. Down 6.8% from its high of 71,601, it is drifting towards the lower end of its 58,132 to 71,601 range. A break below 65,000 on heavy volume would flag a deeper correction. But the S&P 500’s surge to within a point of its own 52-week high provides a stark reminder that global beta is a powerful force if the local data doesn’t spoil the mood.

07 What to watch

  • Brazil Selic (21:30 local): The rate call and forward guidance: a pause or hawkish cut will snap the real tighter and hit rate-sensitive stocks; a dovish cut opens the door to 5.15 USD/BRL.
  • Brazil PMIs (13:00): Services PMI above the 51.3 prior would signal sticky domestic demand, complicating the inflation picture for Copom.
  • Mexico consumer confidence (12:00): A print materially above the 44.1 consensus would bolster the nearshoring story and may lift the beaten-down IPC index.
  • US ISM Services (14:00 UTC): The prices-paid sub-index in particular—a hot reading would reverse the overnight bond rally and hit Latam duration trades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Ibovespa flat if US markets soared?

Local investors in Brazil are sitting on their hands before the Selic decision and a run of PMI data. The index is dominated by commodity stocks like Vale and Petrobras, which did not participate in the US tech rally.

What is the Selic and why does today’s decision matter?

The Selic is Brazil’s benchmark interest rate, currently at 14.25%, set by the central bank’s Copom committee. A change in the rate—or even a shift in the bank’s forward guidance—directly affects the value of the real, the cost of credit, and the appeal of Brazilian stocks and bonds.

How does the US dollar index (DXY) affect Latin America today?

The DXY is barely moving at 100.011. A flat or falling dollar makes it cheaper for foreign investors to buy Latin American assets and eases the burden of dollar-denominated debt, supporting currencies like the real, peso, and sol.

What is the Merval and why is it down?

The S&P Merval is Argentina’s main stock index. It fell 0.51% on Monday as the peso continues to depreciate in a controlled manner, and local traders are weighing the impact of ongoing IMF programme negotiations on domestic asset prices.
