Itajaí Mayor Wants Covid-19 Treatment Using Rectal Ozone Application

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Volnei Morastoni, the Mayor of Itajaí in the state of Santa Catarina, announced yesterday that he intends to add another Covid-19 treatment option in the city: administration of ozone through the anus, in cases that have tested positive for coronavirus. The procedure has no scientifically proven efficacy against Covid.

The Mayor, who also is a physician, said on a live Facebook feed that he had signed the city up for the National Research Ethics Committee (CONEP), linked to the Ministry of Health, to join a research protocol on the use of ozone.

The Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) have repeatedly announced that there is still no cure for Covid-19 or even treatment of proven scientific efficacy – when it meets several stages of testing and specific registration as a drug to be used for a given disease.

“It’s probably going to be a rectal application, a very quiet, very quick, two-minute application on a thin catheter and that produces an excellent result,” Morastoni said.

The Mayor added that the treatment would only be aimed at “those who so desire” and that it would only be used in confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. He added that it would probably involve ten sessions of ozone application, “simple, fast, from two to three minutes a day”.

Other Treatments

Morastoni mentioned that the treatment would complement other options offered by the administration: “In addition to ivermectin, azithromycin, as well as camphor [a medicine for homeopathic therapy], we will supply ozone.”

In early July, the municipality of Itajaí distributed ivermectin to the city’s residents, despite its lack of proven efficacy in treating Covid-19. The drug is used to treat worms and parasites.

Two weeks later, the number of deaths from the novel coronavirus increased by around 58 percent, rising from 45 to 71 deaths between July 7th and 21st. On Monday evening, the city totaled 105 deaths and 3,648 infections.

During the live broadcast, Morastoni quoted physician Lucy Kerr, an advocate of the use of ivermectin in the treatment of Covid-19. The doctor has had a YouTube video removed after the platform understood that the content contributed to misinformation about the pandemic.

In the video, she pointed out ivermectin as a “cure” for the coronavirus, contrary to the Ministry of Health, the W..H.O., and the United States Health Authority (FDA). The video content was deemed misleading by COMPROVA, a news screening project of which UOL is part.
