Iron ore sinks on new fears of lockdown in China
The price of iron ore sank this Monday (21) after deaths from Covid in Beijing once again triggered concerns about the outlook for demand for the commodity.
Steelmaking raw material fell as much as 4.3% in Singapore, to close to US$94 a tonne, after three weeks of recovery.
The Covid outbreaks in China undermine recent optimism about a possible easing of virus restrictions in China. There was a large sell-off across the country’s markets on Monday.

On Saturday (19), Beijing reported its first death from Covid since the end of May, and two more were announced on Sunday (20), along with a rise in cases. The capital’s outbreak closed businesses and some schools, while the city of Shijiazhuang, home to 11 million people, ordered a five-day lockdown.
Comprehensive measures to fight the virus this year have complicated construction activity across China. This adds to a host of other factors clouding the prospects for demand for iron ore, from production cuts at mills to the country’s chronic real estate crisis.
