RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The number of homicides dropped by 22 percent nationwide during the first semester of this year, compared to the same period in 2018.

The information was released yesterday, October 14th, in Brasília, by the Ministry of Justice and Public Safety, based on data from the National Public Security, Prison, Weapons and Ammunition Traceability, Genetic Material, Digital and Drug Information System (SINESP).

According to the president, 5,423 fewer murders were recorded in the first half of this year when compared to the same period in 2018.

According to the ministry, the reduction in the total number of incidents was also found in the other eight types of crimes recorded on the platform that collects information provided by the states and the Federal District, from reports of incidents by the civil police.

Rape cases dropped by 12 percent. Attempted murders decreased by 9.4 percent. There was also a drop in the total number of armed robberies (-23.8 percent); bodily injury followed by death (-3.2 percent); robberies against financial institutions (-40.9 percent); cargo theft (-25.7 percent); vehicle theft (-27 percent) and vehicle burglary (-9.9 percent).
