Guaidó leaves Venezuela on foot and goes to Colombia

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó affirmed that he arrived on foot in Colombia in the framework of the summit called by the president of that country, Gustavo Petro, to reach an agreement between the government and the opposition of the Caribbean nation.

“I have just arrived in Colombia (…) on foot. I have come in the framework of the summit convened by President Petro for this Tuesday, April 25, and I will request a meeting with the international delegations that will attend,” Guaidó expressed in a statement published on his Twitter account.

A little later, the Colombian Foreign Ministry informed that Guaidó was not invited to the international summit organized by Petro’s government to seek a solution to the political situation in Venezuela.

Recently, the opposition leader in Venezuela, the self-proclaiming president in charge, stated that he would meet in Colombia with his fellow citizens.

With the arrival of Petro to the presidency of Colombia last August, relations with Venezuela were reestablished, including the opening of borders between both countries, which remained closed for years.

At the end of March, Petro announced the convening on April 25 of an international summit in the Colombian capital to promote dialogue between the opposition and the Venezuelan government, which could lead to the lifting sanctions imposed by Washington against the Caribbean nation.

Visiting the United States last week, the Colombian president proposed to his US counterpart, Joe Biden, a gradual deactivation of the restrictive measures in force, parallel to the progression of the electoral schedule with guarantees in Venezuela and the entry of this country into the Inter-American Human Rights System.

On January 23, 2019, Guaidó proclaimed himself “interim president” after disavowing Maduro’s reelection in the May 2018 presidential elections.

Maduro, who had assumed his second mandate on January 10 of that same year, qualified that act as a coup attempt against him.

However, in December 2022, a sector of the opposition decided to end the interim government, considering that it had been weakened and had not fulfilled its objectives.
