EU ambassador to Brazil shares on Twitter article criticizing Lula for his ties to dictatorships and then backs out

The European Union Ambassador to Brazil, Ignacio Ybáñez, has just burned his fingers on tense Brazilian politics.

He shared on his social networks an article by columnist Demétrio Magnolli, published in Folha de S. Paulo, which criticizes President Lula for his closeness to dictatorships such as those in Venezuela and Cuba.

In the text, the columnist says that Lula misses the “opportunity to raise his voice for free elections in Venezuela, a political opening in Cuba, and an end to the savage repression by the Ortega regime in Nicaragua.

In recent weeks, Lula has had international meetings in the region.

Still, he plans to meet with Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, of whom he is a friend and partner in the Foro de São Paulo.

Ybáñez also highlighted the verse by Chico Buarque quoted in the article: “Time passed by the window, and only Carolina didn’t see it.

Later the ambassador tweeted an explanation regarding him sharing the Folha aritcle.
