Covid-19 vaccine rejection grows in 2,097 Brazilian municipalities – CNM survey

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The 17th edition of the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM) survey on the Covid-19 pandemic detected people seeking to choose vaccines. According to the survey, 2,109 (74.6%) cities reported this type of position. Another 687 (24.3%) did not report this position among their citizens.

Cases of people refusing to be administered certain immunizers were also reported. The most widely refused vaccines were the CoronaVac – 1,067 (50.6%), Oxford/AstraZeneca, 829 (39.3%) and, to a lesser extent, Janssen, 66 (3.1%).

Supply

Among the cities that took part in the survey, 2,025 (71.7%) said they had no Covid-19 vaccine shortage issues this week. The number of cities that experienced supply shortages reached 775 (27.4%), higher than last week’s record, when 17.7% of cities reported such issues.

Among the cities that were not supplied with immunizers, 739 (95.4%) lacked the first dose. In 102 (13.2%) of cities without vaccines, the second dose was lacking.

Age group

Among the cities heard, 74.6% started immunization in age groups under 60. According to the survey, 132 (4.7%) are in the 50 to 55 age group, 349 (12.4%) from 45 to 49, 709 (25.2%) from 40 to 44, 1,070 (38%) from 35 to 39, 379 (13.5%) from 30 to 34, 84 (3%) from 25 to 29, and 69 (2.4%) in the 18 to 24 age group.

Of the total number of municipal administrations surveyed, 1,975 (69.9%) reported the adoption of some form of distancing or restriction in the hours of non-essential activities. Another 808 (28.6%) answered that they had not implemented any such measure during the pandemic. Last week, distancing rules were reported by 72.4% of the cities surveyed.

Cases and deaths

Among the municipalities surveyed, in 1,142 (40.4%) there was a decline in the number of Covid-19 cases, in 143 (5.1%) no new cases were reported, in 1,036 (36.7%) cases remained stable, and in 469 (16.6%) there was an increase.

As for deaths, in 1,426 (50.5%) no new deaths were reported, in 610 (21.6%) the situation remained stable, in 465 (16.5%) there was a decrease, and in 289 (10.2%), an increase in the number of lives lost was reported.

Supplies

The risk of “intubation kit” medicine shortage was reported by 218 cities, representing 7.7% of the total. Other 2,326 did not report the issue, equivalent to 82.3%.

Last week, the proportion of cities reporting the issue stood at 9.8%. The “intubation kit” comprises medicines used for ventilation support in Covid-19 patients, such as anesthetics and neuroblockers.
