More than 300 US soldiers are in Colombia for a joint military exercise that started on Tuesday 27 October 2026 and runs until Wednesday 11 November. Colombia’s Defense Ministry says the training covers drug trafficking, illegal mining and drone threats, and it calls the exercise a training event, not a combat operation.

For US readers, the exercise shows how close Washington and Bogotá have become on security under President Abelardo de la Espriella. It matters to investors and travelers because a US presence is a political issue in Colombia, where the constitution gives the Senate the power to permit foreign troops to transit the national territory.

What Happened

The Defense Ministry announced the exercise on Monday 26 October 2026. The first US soldiers arrived on Tuesday 27 October at the Tolemaida military fort in the town of Nilo, in Cundinamarca department.

The exercise is called Vanguardia del Sur 2026, or Southern Vanguard. The Defense Ministry counts it as the fourth edition in Colombia.

The first training event took place on Friday 30 October, an air evacuation of a simulated patient hurt in a minefield. The patient is flown from Tolemaida to the Cavalry School in Bogotá, which tests first aid and medical protocols.

Who Is Taking Part

The US side is light infantry from the US Army’s Mountain Battalion, which trains for rough, high terrain. They work with Colombia’s Counter-Narcotics Battalion No. 1, an army unit that fights drug trafficking.

The Defense Ministry says the aim is interoperability, meaning the ability of the two armies to work together. The units exchange tactics, techniques and procedures and practice joint planning.

In Plain English

An exercise is planned training, not an attack, and the Colombian military says it respects national sovereignty and the law. Illegal mining means digging for gold and other minerals without a state licence, often under the control of armed groups.

Drone threats means cheap armed drones, which armed groups have used against soldiers and police in Colombia this year. Our report on drone strikes in El Tarra shows how close this danger is.

The Drones Question

Colombia agreed to receive three MQ-9A Reaper drones from the United States, unmanned aircraft used for surveillance and strikes. Reports in October said the aircraft were moved from Africa, as two similar aircraft went to Ecuador, where they fly from the Taura air base.

The exercise announcement does not mention the Reaper, and no Colombian official has said the drones take part in these drills. Any link between the drones and these drills is therefore not confirmed.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket, a prediction-market platform, lists a market on a US strike on Colombia, which traded about US$2.3 million. It gave a 17.5% chance of a strike by 31 December 2026 at 3:20 p.m. ET on 30 October, a bet that is not tied to this exercise.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What It Means for You

If you hold Colombian bonds or stocks through US funds, the exercise is a signal of political alignment rather than a market event. Closer US ties can help trade talks, but a rise in US military activity can also stir domestic opposition.

Travelers face no change, because the drills are held at a military base and the sites are not open to visitors. The US State Department’s advisory for Colombia remains the guide for safety in border and conflict areas.

What Is Not Known

It is not known whether the Senate approved this deployment, since the Defense Ministry’s announcement does not say. It is also unclear what happens to the US soldiers after 11 November.

It is not known whether the Reaper drones will support Colombian operations, or who will fly them. Officials have given no detail on weapons, the number of aircraft or their base.
