China and Russia Back Iran’s Peaceful Nuclear Claims Amid Rising Tensions

China, Russia, and Iran convened in Beijing on March 14, 2025, issuing a joint statement supporting Iran’s assertion that its nuclear program serves exclusively peaceful purposes.

The trilateral meeting brought together Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

The three countries called for diplomatic engagement based on mutual respect and urged an end to “all unlawful unilateral sanctions” against Tehran. They emphasized the need to address root causes rather than resort to sanctions, pressure, or threats of force.

This high-level meeting coincided with a UN Security Council conference discussing Iran’s expanding uranium stockpile. Recent findings from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) show Iran has increased its 60% enriched uranium to 274.8 kilograms, a 50% jump since December.

Such uranium enrichment sits just below weapons-grade levels of 90%. The IAEA expressed “serious concern” over this accumulation, noting Iran remains the only non-nuclear weapon state producing such material.

Technical assessments indicate Iran now possesses enough highly enriched uranium to produce weapons-grade material for seven nuclear bombs within three weeks. The first 25 kilograms could be produced in less than one week at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant.

Diplomatic Tensions Rise Over Iran’s Nuclear Program

Tehran continues to reject accusations of nuclear weapons development. China and Russia reaffirmed their support for Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The diplomatic push occurs amid growing pressure from the United States. President Trump recently sent a letter to Iranian leadership proposing new negotiations while warning about possible military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian firmly rejected these overtures, stating, “It is unacceptable for us that they give orders and make threats.”

The three nations also stressed the importance of preserving the 2015 nuclear deal framework, from which the U.S. withdrew in 2018. Just days before the meeting, Iran, Russia, and China conducted their fifth joint naval exercise in the Gulf of Oman since 2019.

European nations have set a June 2025 deadline for Iran to conclude a nuclear deal before implementing snapback sanctions. The outcome remains uncertain as regional tensions continue to escalate.
