Chile’s Peso Firms As IPSA Rebounds On Copper And Rebalance Flows

Key Points

  • USD/CLP hovered near 910 as Chile’s “dólar observado” reference slipped from 914.99 (Dec 19) to 909.90 (Dec 22), signaling peso strength rather than “parallel” FX stress.
  • The S&P IPSA rebounded 1.1% on Friday to 10,304.26, with index rebalancing inflating turnover as year-end liquidity thins.
  • Copper near $5.54/lb and a calmer Dollar Index around 98.6 kept the global backdrop constructive for Chile risk assets.

Chile’s markets opened Monday with the peso firmer and equities still digesting last week’s finish, backed by a steady U.S. dollar and copper strength.

In FX, the key point for international readers is what did not happen: Chile does not run an Argentina-style split between an “official” and “blue” dollar.

Investors see a floating spot rate and a central-bank reference rate, plus wider retail spreads. With spot around 910.22 early Monday, the market is still leaning toward a stronger peso, even if holiday trading can exaggerate swings.

Friday’s equity session offered the clearest window into positioning. The IPSA’s 1.1% jump was led by Banco Itaú Chile (+4.5%), Falabella (+2.9%) and LATAM Airlines (+2.4%).

But the tape was unusually loud: an FTSE Russell rebalance drove turnover to nearly CLP 380 billion, more than double a typical session.

The day’s top winners on the Santiago tape were PUCOBRE (+11.13%), MOLLER (+6.06%), SCHWAGER (+4.84%), ITAUCL (+4.46%) and EMBONOR-B (+3.23%).

The biggest losers were ABC-OSA (-9.37%), IANSA (-4.62%), MANQUEHUE (-3.76%), ENTEL (-3.48%) and PLANVITAL (-2.77%).

Offshore, the iShares MSCI Chile ETF (ECH) closed Friday at $39.31 on about 947,948 shares, with roughly $1.02 billion in assets.

Policy remains the hinge. Chile’s central bank has cut the policy rate to 4.5% as inflation cools toward a 3% target path, a stance many investors read as disciplined.

Traders describe recent moves as “buy the rumor, sell the news,” shifting from the vote itself to cabinet choices and governability, and punishing any drift toward heavier state control.

Technicals echo that split: USD/CLP RSI was about 39 on the 4-hour and 37 on the daily chart, with MACD negative; the IPSA RSI sat near 60 (4-hour) and 64 (daily) even as the MACD histogram cooled.
