Key Facts

  • —What is happening Diesel in Chile rises 91.5 pesos a litre (about US$0.09) and petrol 41.3 pesos (about US$0.04) from Thursday, 22 October, the fifth consecutive increase.
  • —Why it matters Diesel moves trucks and buses in the world’s top copper producer, and Chilean fuel prices follow import costs on the US Gulf Coast.
  • —The numbers Kerosene rises 24.8 pesos (about US$0.03) a litre. Santiago averages reach 1,527 pesos (US$1.57) for 93-octane petrol and 1,558 pesos (US$1.60) for diesel.
  • —Who is who ENAP is Chile’s state-owned oil company. Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz, in conservative President José Antonio Kast’s government, says the state subsidises diesel by about 200 pesos (US$0.21) a litre.
  • —What to watch Whether another increase arrives around mid-November, as one university observatory expects, and whether the government adds relief beyond its current diesel subsidy.
  • —What it means for you Diesel in Santiago averages about US$6.05 a gallon, a record high, so freight and transport firms in Chile are the most exposed.
  • —Power Index Chile ranks 3rd of 14 in The Rio Times Latin America Power Index, with 63.6 points (October 2026 edition).

Chile’s state oil company ENAP says fuel prices rise from Thursday, 22 October, with diesel up about US$0.09 a litre. It is the fifth consecutive increase.

Chile fuel prices rise again on Thursday, 22 October, ENAP said, with diesel up 91.5 pesos a litre (about US$0.09). Petrol of 93 and 97 octane rises 41.3 pesos (about US$0.04), the fifth consecutive increase.

Diesel carries trucks and buses in the world’s largest copper-producing country, so each rise spreads into freight costs. ENAP builds its estimates on import prices from the US Gulf Coast, which ties Chilean pumps to US markets.

What ENAP Said About Chile Fuel Prices on 21 October

ENAP’s weekly price report, dated Santiago, Wednesday, 21 October, lists the estimated change for each fuel this week. Diesel rises 91.5 pesos a litre (about US$0.09) and kerosene 24.8 pesos (about US$0.03).

Vehicle liquefied petroleum gas rises 13.9 pesos a litre (about US$0.01). Conversions in this article use the 22 October rate of 974.77 pesos per US dollar from open.er-api.com.

ENAP says it does not set or regulate fuel prices in Chile. It sells to distributors, which fix pump prices on their own in an open, competitive market.

The estimate also reflects Mepco, the state fuel price stabilisation mechanism, and the FEPP, a state oil price stabilisation fund. Meganoticias, 24horas and Cooperativa carried the same figures on Wednesday.

Where Pump Prices Stand After the Rise

La Tercera reports average Santiago pump prices after the increase of 1,527 pesos a litre (US$1.57) for 93-octane petrol. That is just under the record of 1,546 pesos (US$1.59).

Diesel averages 1,558 pesos a litre (US$1.60), which La Tercera calls its highest price on record. That is about US$6.05 a gallon, a Rio Times conversion.

Rio Times calculations on those averages put the rise at about 2.8% for 93-octane petrol and 6.2% for diesel. They assume distributors pass the full increase on at the pump.

The Universidad Diego Portales observatory (OCEC-UDP) counts diesel up over 390 pesos a litre (about US$0.40) since late July. Analyst Juan Ortiz notes diesel now stands above its late-March level.

What the Government Says

Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz said on 21 October that the state subsidises diesel by about 200 pesos a litre (about US$0.21). He said the government spent 300,000 million pesos (about US$308 million) in the last three weeks to ease the rises.

Quiroz said the petrol rise would be the legal minimum, about 40 pesos (about US$0.04), because the law obliges the state. He blamed the war in the Middle East, the war in Russia and the destruction of refineries worldwide.

He said the state will keep supporting prices with subsidies even after these rises, as far as public finances allow. La Tercera adds that the Kast government changed Mepco in response to Chile’s fiscal situation.

Gonzalo Escobar of the UNAB university expects prices to keep rising until supply and production normalise. He doubts the Finance Ministry will create a new mechanism to cushion the increases.

Bus Operators and Truckers Warn of Strain

Fenabus, the national bus federation, declared a state of alert over the diesel rise, Cooperativa reported. Its president, Marcos Carter, said the industry cannot keep absorbing these increases.

Fenabus says its members run more than 56,000 buses and minibuses and support more than 140,000 direct jobs. It warns that US$1.4 billion in leasing portfolios risks falling into arrears.

Meganoticias adds that truckers’ guilds are concerned about a fifth consecutive rise in transport costs. It links the increases mainly to international tensions and the global energy situation.

For context, see earlier coverage of the projected 22 October rise and Kast’s aid to taxis and truckers. The March price shock and the Chile news hub give more background.

What It Means for US Readers

Chilean fuel prices are estimated from US Gulf Coast import costs, so swings in US refined-product markets reach Santiago pumps within weeks. Brent crude stood near US$110 a barrel on Wednesday, La Tercera reported.

Diesel at about US$6.05 a gallon raises operating costs for freight and bus firms working in Chile. Visitors may notice higher transport prices in coming weeks, though each distributor sets its own pump price.

The state is also absorbing cost, about US$308 million in three weeks on Quiroz’s figure. That is a fiscal factor for investors who hold Chilean peso bonds.

What Is Not Known

ENAP calls its report an estimate and publishes it every Wednesday. Actual prices at each station may differ from the Santiago averages quoted here.

Cooperativa gives the diesel rise as 91.3 pesos, while ENAP’s report and 24horas give 91.5 pesos. This article uses ENAP’s figure, and the gap is too small to matter.

It is not known whether the government will add relief beyond the current diesel subsidy. Nor is it known how large the effect on consumer inflation will be.

What Comes Next

Juan Ortiz of OCEC-UDP expects another increase around mid-November, of about 41 pesos (about US$0.04) a litre for petrol. He calls diesel harder to forecast.

ENAP publishes its next weekly report on Wednesday, 28 October. That report is an estimate and does not itself fix pump prices.
