Key Facts
- —The country Chile imports a large share of its fuel, so swings in world oil prices and in the peso reach its pumps within weeks.
- —Why it matters Diesel carries freight and buses, so each increase spreads into everyday costs, and the peso is near its weakest level of 2026.
- —Why now Brent crude rose to US$105.8 a barrel this week and settled at US$109.86 on Friday 16 October, while the peso averaged 982 to the US dollar.
- —What happened ENAP held wholesale prices on 15 October, and economists now project a new rise for Thursday 22 October that ENAP will confirm on Wednesday 21 October.
- —The numbers The projections are about 41 pesos (US$0.04) per litre for petrol and 90 pesos (US$0.09) for diesel, which would be the fifth rise in a row by one count.
- —What it means for you Expect dearer fuel in Chile from 22 October, with freight and bus costs exposed first, though nothing is official until ENAP publishes.
- —Still open The official ENAP figures due on 21 October, and whether the government adds relief beyond its aid to taxi and school-transport owners.
- —Power Index Chile ranks 3rd of 14 in The Rio Times Latin America Power Index, with 63.6 points (October 2026 edition).
Chile fuel prices are set to rise again on Thursday 22 October, with economists projecting about 41 pesos (US$0.04) more per litre for petrol and 90 pesos (US$0.09) for diesel. The state oil company ENAP will publish the official figures on Wednesday 21 October, so these numbers are estimates and not yet confirmed.
Chile imports a large share of its fuel, so a jump in world oil prices reaches its pumps within weeks. ENAP’s price estimates draw on import prices from reference markets such as the US Gulf Coast, which ties Chilean pumps to US refined-product trading.
Why Oil and the Peso Push Chile Fuel Prices Up
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose from US$102 to US$105.8 a barrel during the week after Houthi attacks on oil and civilian sites in Saudi Arabia, according to the economic observatory of Universidad Diego Portales (OCEC-UDP). On Friday 16 October Brent settled at US$109.86 after briefly topping US$110, its highest close since 19 May, and US crude (WTI) gained 3.5% to US$101.41, The Nation of Thailand and SBS News reported.
The peso adds to the pressure, because the peso averaged 982 per US dollar this week against 978.3 the week before, the highest weekly level of 2026, OCEC-UDP said. The Banco Central de Chile observed rate was 984.09 pesos per US dollar on 16 October, and we use that rate for every US$ figure here.
How the Mepco Mechanism Works
Mepco, the fuel price stabilisation mechanism, smooths the gap between the market-based base price and ENAP’s wholesale price and passes it on gradually, Emol reported. It adjusts every three weeks, and the last step took effect on 1 October, when 93-octane petrol rose 39.4 pesos (US$0.04) per litre and diesel 95 pesos (US$0.10), ENAP said at the time.
Diesel has risen on every adjustment date since the end of July, with 97.4 pesos (US$0.10) on 20 August, 89 pesos (US$0.09) on 10 September and 95 pesos (US$0.10) on 1 October, OCEC-UDP said. Petrol also rose 34.8 pesos (US$0.04) on 20 August and 35 pesos (US$0.04) on 10 September, and ENAP confirmed higher prices for both fuels from 30 July, so El Mostrador’s count of the 22 October step as the fifth rise in a row holds for petrol and diesel.
The gap between the base price and ENAP’s wholesale price is above 280 pesos (US$0.28) per litre for 93-octane petrol, 360 pesos (US$0.37) for 97-octane and 290 pesos (US$0.29) for diesel this week, OCEC-UDP calculated. Its projected diesel step is larger than the petrol step because the state has already absorbed a high fiscal cost and will contain less.

What the Projected Rise Means in US Dollars
At 984.09 pesos per US dollar, the projected diesel rise of 90 pesos equals about US$0.09 per litre or roughly US$0.35 per US gallon, and the petrol rise of 41.3 pesos is about US$0.04 per litre. A brokerage analyst quoted by The Clinic sees petrol up 37 to 45 pesos (about US$0.04 to US$0.05) and diesel up 80 to 100 pesos (about US$0.08 to US$0.10) per litre.
If the projections hold, El Mostrador calculates that diesel would cost about 400 pesos (US$0.41) more per litre than at the end of July and petrol up to 150 pesos (US$0.15) more. By our conversion that is roughly US$1.54 and US$0.58 per US gallon.
What Happens Next
ENAP publishes its weekly report on Wednesdays, and the one due on 21 October will show whether Mepco passes the increase on from Thursday 22 October. On 14 October ENAP held its wholesale prices for petrol and diesel for the week from 15 October and raised only kerosene, by 5.1 pesos (about US$0.005) per litre.
ENAP says it does not set or regulate pump prices, and distributors choose what to charge, so stations can differ even when its reference prices do not change. The government’s fuel aid for taxi and school-transport owners is covered in our report Chile Fuel Relief: Kast Extends US$103 Monthly Aid to Taxis as Truckers Rule Out Strike, which notes that truckers are not covered.
What It Means for You
For US readers, dearer fuel in Chile raises the cost of rental cars and road trips, and the diesel step lands on freight and bus fares, while Chile Imports Jump 13.5% as Diesel Bill Nearly Triples showed how large the diesel import bill already is. Investors tracking Chile should note that a weak peso and costly imported fuel both push local costs up, although nothing is final until 21 October.
Travellers should expect fuel to cost more from 22 October, although pump prices vary by station and the Bencina en Línea site lists current prices. Our guides Chile Natural Resources Explained 2026, Chile Security and Crime Explained 2026 and the Santiago City Guide for Expats and Visitors give the wider background.
What Is Not Known
The official ENAP figures behind the Chile fuel prices of 22 October are not out, and every number for that date is a projection from OCEC-UDP, Emol’s economists or a brokerage analyst. It is also unclear how much Mepco will contain, because OCEC-UDP’s estimates hold only while the mechanism operates as designed.
Brent briefly topped US$110 on Friday and settled at US$109.86, while the US$105.8 in the OCEC-UDP bulletin is its weekly reading, so the two figures measure different things. How long prices stay high depends on the Middle East conflict and on the dollar, and the sources do not say.
The fifth rise in a row is still a projection, because the four earlier steps on 30 July, 20 August, 10 September and 1 October are confirmed but the next one is not. The count is El Mostrador’s, and ENAP’s own report page could not be read by machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
When will Chile fuel prices rise next?
The projected increase would take effect on Thursday 22 October. ENAP is due to confirm the figures on Wednesday 21 October.
How much will petrol and diesel rise in Chile?
Economists project about 41 pesos (US$0.04) more per litre for petrol and 90 pesos (US$0.09) for diesel. These are estimates until ENAP publishes its report.
What is Mepco?
Mepco is Chile’s fuel price stabilisation mechanism, which smooths gaps between market-based and wholesale prices. It passes increases on gradually, on a three-week cycle, Emol reported.
Does ENAP set the price at the pump?
No, ENAP says it does not set or regulate fuel prices in Chile. Distributors choose their sale prices, so stations can differ.
Why is oil driving the increase?
Brent crude rose to US$105.8 a barrel this week, and the peso averaged 982 per US dollar, which raises import costs. OCEC-UDP links the oil rise to Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
