The Central African Republic neighbours six countries, and much of what it buys, sells or fears crosses one of those borders. This guide explains who they are, what links them, and why Sudan’s war and the Cameroon border matter most.
It covers the six frontiers, the people who cross them and the UN vote on peacekeepers due in mid-November.

Six Neighbours at a Glance
The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in the middle of the continent, with its capital, Bangui, on the Ubangi River. Its neighbours are Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, DR Congo, the Republic of Congo and Cameroon.
The World Bank, the global development lender, counts 5,513,282 people in the country in 2025 and an economy of US$3.07 billion. That is about US$556 per person, the lowest of the five neighbours with World Bank output data.
Next to it sit much larger partners, and the contrast shapes every relationship. DR Congo has 112.8 million people and a US$91.0 billion economy, and Sudan 51.7 million and US$60.2 billion.
Cameroon has 29.9 million people and US$58.9 billion, Chad 21.0 million and US$21.5 billion, and the Republic of Congo 6.5 million and US$16.3 billion. South Sudan has 12.2 million people, but no recent output figure.
Our Central African Republic explainer covers the country itself, and the Rio Times Central African Republic page gathers the latest news. This guide looks outward, in the same way as our piece on Equatorial Guinea and its neighbours.
Chad and Sudan to the North
The north is where the Central African Republic neighbours meet their most dangerous frontier. Chad and Sudan share a tri-border zone with the country, in the north-east, near the town of Birao.
Sudan’s civil war has pushed fighters and refugees across that line. UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, counts 40,204 Sudanese refugees living in the Central African Republic at the end of 2025.
On Tuesday 20 October 2026 the head of the UN mission, Valentine Rugwabiza, told the Security Council that Sudan’s war is spilling over. She described a 30 June 2026 attack by armed groups on Am-Dafock, a Sudan border town.
That attack killed civilians and members of the security forces, displaced 17,000 people and injured six UN peacekeepers. Armed fighters held the town for five days before retreating across the border into Sudan.
UNHCR counts 140,062 Central African refugees in Chad at the end of 2025, plus 4,834 asylum seekers. It also counts 5,013 Chadian refugees inside the Central African Republic.
The two governments also dispute incidents along the frontier, as our report on the Central African Republic denying a Chad border rift shows. Border security in the north-east is the open question between Bangui and Chad’s capital, N’Djamena.

South Sudan and the Southeast
The east and southeast face South Sudan. Here the danger comes from old armed groups, not from a neighbouring army.
The UN Security Council heard on 20 October 2026 of 26 serious incidents in the southeast between June and September. They were blamed on suspected members of the Lord’s Resistance Army, an armed group of Ugandan origin.
The incidents included the abduction of 68 civilians, about 40 of them children. A local militia called Azandé Ani Kpi Gbé also threatens villagers.
South Sudan sends and receives few refugees. On Monday 19 October 2026 Rugwabiza announced the release of three hostages, including the sub-prefect of Bambouti, held since December 2025.
UNHCR counts 3,326 South Sudanese refugees in the country and 2,893 Central African refugees in South Sudan at the end of 2025. Both numbers are small beside those for Chad or Cameroon.
The UN calls the northeast and southeast particularly worrying, notably around mining sites and along cattle-herder corridors. Those two frontiers are the ones to watch.
DR Congo and the Republic of Congo on the Ubangi
The Ubangi River forms much of the southern border, with Bangui facing DR Congo across the water. The river is a crossing point for people and goods, and for refugees.
UNHCR counts 201,324 Central African refugees in DR Congo at the end of 2025, plus 65,080 asylum seekers, the most of any neighbour. Another 30,252 refugees and 5,291 asylum seekers are in the Republic of Congo, the smaller Congo.
DR Congo is also fighting a record outbreak of Ebola, a deadly viral disease, across eight provinces. Its Health Ministry counted 10,141 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths as of Monday 26 October 2026, the UN says.
Hunger is deepening as well, with a UN-backed food alert forecasting 28.8 million Congolese in acute food insecurity through December 2026. Conditions worsened most in the north-east and east, so the Central African Republic neighbours to the south face a deepening crisis.
Further west lies Cameroon, which hosts more Central African refugees than any other neighbour. Its role is the subject of the next section.

Cameroon and the Western Border
Cameroon is the western neighbour and the largest host of Central African refugees. The World Bank describes the Central African Republic as landlocked, so its trade has to cross a neighbour’s territory.
Our report on the Bangui truck blockade looks at what a stoppage on that western border means for Bangui. A halt there can lift prices in the capital quickly.
Cameroon also hosts the largest group of Central African refugees. UNHCR counts 277,873 there, plus 4,195 asylum seekers, or about 42% of the 658,828 refugees in all six neighbours.
Cameroon and the Central African Republic share a currency as well. Both use the CFA franc, fixed at 655.957 to the euro (about 587 to the US dollar on 31 October 2026).
The World Bank counts trade at 52.9% of the Central African Republic’s economic output in 2025, up from 46.4% in 2024. Its data does not split that trade by neighbour.

Refugees, CEMAC and Peacekeepers
Adding the six neighbours, UNHCR counts 658,828 Central African refugees abroad at the end of 2025. Inside the country, 427,479 people were displaced, and 183,922 displaced people had returned home.
The map of Central African Republic neighbours is therefore also a map of people on the move. The movement runs both ways, because Sudanese, Congolese and Chadian refugees also shelter in the country.
CEMAC, the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, has six members. They are Cameroon, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
Its commission has its seat in Bangui, and the members share the CFA franc. Security on the ground, however, is the job of the UN mission, deployed in 2014 and known as MINUSCA.
MINUSCA has more than 12,000 peacekeepers, and the UN Secretary-General recommends a one-year extension. The United States has argued for larger troop cuts, and the Security Council must decide before mid-November 2026.
Rugwabiza said 1,907 fighters have been disarmed since July 2025 under the 2019 peace agreement. Local council elections reached 127 of 177 municipalities by 1 October, and the rest were due on Sunday 25 October 2026.
What It Means for US Readers
Americans should check official US travel advice before any trip to the country or its border regions. The UN reports rising violence in the east, near Sudan and South Sudan.
The US position on the UN mission’s size will be tested in the November renewal vote. For investors, direct exposure is small, because the World Bank counts the whole economy at US$3.07 billion.
What Is Not Known
The value of trade with each neighbour is not published. Nor are the number of cross-border traders or the length of each border.
It is not known whether the Security Council will renew the UN mission at its current size. Nor is it known whether Sudan’s war will spread, or how many people the 25 October local polls reached.
