CANADA · ANALYSIS

When US clocks fall back on Sunday, three Canadian provinces will stay put, so the gap with the United States changes for millions of workers and travellers. Here is who changes, who does not, and what it means for a call across the border.

Key Facts

  • What changes On Sunday 1 November 2026, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba keep their summer clocks all year, while most of Ontario and Quebec and the Atlantic provinces turn them back.
  • Why it matters Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg will run one hour ahead of their US neighbours until March, so meetings shift by one hour.
  • Already fixed Saskatchewan and Yukon stopped changing clocks years ago and stay put.
  • What to do Name the city and the time zone in every invitation until the US clocks move again.

Canada spans six time zones and leaves clock rules to its provinces and territories. For years, that meant a few quiet exceptions.

This autumn it means a real split in the country’s west.

Who Stops Changing Clocks on 1 November

British Columbia made its last clock change on Sunday 8 March 2026. Its government said the new year-round time, called Pacific time, sits at UTC−7 (seven hours behind Coordinated Universal Time) and will not move back on 1 November.

Premier David Eby said the decision “isn’t just about clocks” but about “making life easier for families” and reducing disruption for businesses. Most of the province is covered.

Alberta moves to what its government calls Alberta Time on 1 November 2026. It is equivalent to UTC−6, so the province will no longer reset to Mountain Standard Time in winter.

Manitoba will not turn its clocks back either. Its government named the new year-round time Manitoba Standard Time, five hours behind UTC (UTC−5), the same clock the province used from March to November.

Why the US Gap Moves by One Hour

The United States ends daylight saving time at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday 1 November 2026. Cities that keep their clocks stay one hour ahead of their American neighbours until March.

Vancouver, at UTC−7, will be one hour ahead of Seattle and Los Angeles, which return to UTC−8. Calgary, at UTC−6, will be one hour ahead of Denver, which returns to UTC−7.

Winnipeg, at UTC−5, will be one hour ahead of Chicago at UTC−6. It will share a clock with New York and Toronto, both at UTC−5.

Who Already Skips the Change

Most of Saskatchewan stays on UTC−6 all year and does not move its clocks. That keeps Regina on Chicago time in winter and one hour ahead of Denver.

Yukon, the territory in Canada’s far northwest, has also stayed on UTC−7 year-round since 2020. Together with Saskatchewan, that now gives Canada’s west a long band of places with one clock all year.

Who Still Turns the Clocks Back

In plain English

Daylight saving time means clocks run one hour ahead in summer. “Skipping the change” means a province keeps its summer clock all year (British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba) or its winter clock all year (Saskatchewan).

Most of Ontario and Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and most of Nunavut still end daylight saving time on 1 November. Newfoundland and Labrador, which has its own time zone half an hour ahead of the Atlantic provinces, also falls back.

Quebec has debated ending the change but no decision has been announced. As of 29 October, the government has not set a date for abolishing it.

What It Means for You

If you run a team in Seattle, Denver or Chicago, check recurring calls with Canadian partners the week of 2 November. A 9:00 a.m. meeting in Vancouver will be 8:00 a.m. for a caller in Seattle.

Name the city and the time zone in contracts and invitations. Software should use a named zone such as America/Vancouver, because a fixed UTC offset breaks the moment a place changes its rules.
