C-390 Millennium in the Running for South Korea’s Aircraft Selection

During the Dubai Air Show 2023, Embraer Defense and Security showcased the C-390 Millennium, a leading military transport aircraft.

This event included meetings with potential clients in early November, highlighting the aircraft’s recent success in the European NATO market.

The C-390 Millennium, known for its capability to transport up to 26 tons, drew significant attention.

In South Korea, a major decision regarding the Light Transport Aircraft-II (LTA-II) program for their Air Force is pending.

This decision, expected in early December, has the C-390 Millennium as a top contender. The aircraft is competing against Lockheed Martin’s C-130J for the contract.

Embraer’s president, João Bosco Costa Jr, emphasized the importance of this potential deal during the Dubai Air Show.

Embraer, in 2022, strengthened its position in South Korea by partnering with local companies ASTG, EMK, and Kencoa Aerospace.

These partnerships aim to support the C-390’s operations in South Korea.

Beyond South Korea, the C-390 Millennium is also anticipated to make inroads in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Embraer is collaborating with BAE Systems to market the aircraft in Saudi Arabia.

The Dubai Air Show was pivotal for the C-390, marked by visits from Dubai’s royal family and high-ranking UAE military officials.

These visits underscored the aircraft’s significance in the region.

Embraer and India

Embraer’s ambitions extend to India, where the C-390 Millennium could fulfill India’s need for a Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA).

India’s government has expressed interest in acquiring 40 to 80 military transport aircraft with payload capacities between 18 and 30 tons, fitting the C-390’s capabilities.

Brazil’s quest for a Medium-Height Air Defense System may further facilitate Embraer’s dealings in India.

As per local media, a potential deal could involve Brazil acquiring India’s Akash NG missile system while India procures the C-390 Millennium, incorporating significant Indian aerospace components.

This mutually beneficial agreement aligns with India’s Make in India initiative and could produce up to 80 C-390 aircraft in India.
