Dossier Shows Dynamics of Cargo Theft in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A report compiled by the Institute of Public Safety (ISP) has provided an overview of cargo theft in the state of Rio de Janeiro during 2018.

Based on historical data since 1991, the study gathers detailed information on the dynamics of thieves, how they act, and also the places where stolen cargoes are taken.

Released on Monday, December 2nd, the Cargo Theft Dossier points out that 9,182 thefts were recorded last year, representing a reduction of 13.4 percent in relation to 2017, when 10,599 such thefts occurred, representing an absolute record in the historical series since 1991.

Most of these cases (54.4 percent) occurred between 8 AM and 1 PM, with a peak between 10 AM and 11 AM, and 80.2 percent occurred between Tuesday and Friday. The municipalities with the highest number of cases are located in the Metropolitan Region, with the capital accounting for 43.8 percent of cases and São Gonçalo, 18.5 percent.

The six areas where the highest number of thefts occurred in 2018 were Bangu, Penha and Vigário Geral in the capital; Complexo do Salgueiro, Lagoinha, Jardim Miriambi and Porto do Rosa, in São Gonçalo. Most of the cargo stolen last year (31.9 percent) was food.

The dossier shows that 44.9 percent of transport vehicles robbed were trucks and at least one motorcycle was used in 46.6 percent of cases to commit the offense.

In 58.6 percent of the cases, the perpetrator instructed the driver to keep driving without getting into the vehicle, and in 75.7 percent of cases, the victims reported the use of a firearm by criminals.
