Brazil’s Porto Alegre Airport Restarts Passenger Services

On July 15, Porto Alegre’s Salgado Filho International Airport will again welcome passengers for boarding and disembarking.

For the past month and a half, these processes were relocated to a shopping center in nearby Canoas, with flights taking off from a military base. This was a temporary solution while Salgado Filho coped with damage from recent flooding.

The management firm, Fraport Brazil, seeks to streamline operations amidst ongoing challenges.

Although passenger services are returning to Salgado Filho, all flights will still operate from the Canoas base, just ten kilometers away.

Daily operations at the airport will span from 6 AM to 9 PM, using undamaged parts of the terminal. Passengers need to arrive three hours early, as boarding gates close 90 minutes before flights.

The terminal’s setup now supports international travel needs from check-in to boarding. Entrances are limited to doors 5 and 6, with security checks located on the third floor. Post-check-in, buses will transport passengers to the aircraft at Canoas.

Returning travelers will reverse this route. Upon landing at Canoas, buses will ferry them back to Salgado Filho for baggage collection.

Throughout, Fraport ensures no one navigates between the airport and the base without supervision.

The terminal also features adapted services, including food outlets to cater to travelers’ needs. Additionally, Parking Lot 2 offers special rates, and vehicle rentals are available at the terminal.

This partial reopening marks a crucial step in recovering from the disruptions caused by spring storms.

The full resumption of airport activities, including cargo services, hangs on a detailed safety evaluation of the runways, expected by year-end.

This slow but steady progress is vital for restoring regional connectivity and supporting local economies dependent on air transport.
