Brazilian Government Slams CONMEBOL President’s Racial Remark in Growing Football Dispute

The Brazilian government issued a formal repudiation against CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez on Tuesday for his controversial racial comparison.

Dominguez sparked outrage by comparing the Copa Libertadores without Brazilian teams to “Tarzan without Cheetah” during Monday’s tournament draw in Paraguay. The statement came just minutes after Dominguez had spoken about fighting racism in football.

Cheetah, a chimpanzee character in Tarzan stories, made the comparison particularly offensive amid recent racist incidents targeting Brazilian players. Three Brazilian ministries jointly released the strongly-worded condemnation.

“The Brazilian government repudiates in the strongest terms the statements made by the President of CONMEBOL,” the official statement declared. The government highlighted CONMEBOL’s repeated failure to implement effective anti-racism measures in competitions.

The controversy stems from a recent incident involving Palmeiras youth players Luighi and Figueiredo. Both faced racist monkey gestures from fans during a match against Paraguay’s Cerro Porteño in the Libertadores Under-20 tournament.

CONMEBOL’s Response to Racism Incident Faces Criticism

CONMEBOL responded with a $50,000 fine for the Paraguayan club, closed-door matches, and social media educational campaigns. Brazilian officials considered these penalties inadequate.

The fine fell below CONMEBOL’s own established minimum of $100,000 for racist incidents set in 2022. Palmeiras president Leila Pereira had previously suggested Brazilian clubs might join CONCACAF tournaments instead.

“If we are not respected here in South America, why not go to CONCACAF?” Pereira questioned publicly. Brazilian clubs wield significant leverage, having dominated the Libertadores for five consecutive years.

Dominguez apologized Tuesday via social media. “The expression I used is a popular phrase and I never intended to belittle anyone,” he wrote. He reaffirmed his commitment to discrimination-free football.
