Brazilian Consulate in Zurich is Attacked With Red Paint

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian consulate in Zurich, Switzerland, dawned stained with red paint, which was thrown against the entrance, windows, and doors of the building.

The attack was recorded on the morning of Monday, September 23rd, by regional deputy Claudio Schmid. He posted on social media that he believes that the attack was carried out by what he called “extreme-left radicals, in the context of climate hysteria”.

Zurich police confirmed the attack, which took place over the weekend, and said there are ongoing investigations, according to the Swiss news website ’20 Minuten’. On Tuesday, September 24th, President Jair Bolsonaro will give the opening speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Brazilian President has been questioned internationally for the way he deals with the environmental issue. This was at least the fourth attack on Brazilian diplomatic posts abroad this year.

In August, climate activists from the Extinction Rebellion group threw red ink at the Brazilian embassy in London to protest against the damage to the Amazon and what they described as “violence against indigenous peoples living there”.

The façade of the Brazilian embassy in Berlin, Germany was attacked twice, in January and February.

In the first attack, on January 5th, the glass was marked with graffiti with the phrase “We will fight against fascism in Brazil”. In the second act, the façade was painted with pink paint.

An unidentified individual released a text claiming authorship in which he stated that the action was an act of solidarity “with the feminist, transgender and antifascist resistance in Brazil, with the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) and to mark the date on which the ‘fascist Jair Bolsonaro’ completed one month in power,” said the text.
