Peru has overtaken Chile as the most important supplier of grapes in the world

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Peru became the world’s leading exporter of fresh grapes in 2021 after its shipments abroad reached US$1.26 billion, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced today, Wednesday.

The figure reached through shipments of this product, the main component of the South American nation’s agricultural export basket, represents a growth of 22% compared to 2020, the institution said in a statement.

With this, Peru has overtaken Chile as the main supplier of grapes in the world, as the neighboring country recorded a shipment of 928 million dollars, followed by the United States with 782 million.

The head of Mincetur, Roberto Sanchez, stressed that the results are “clear evidence of the resilience of exporters and the growth potential” of Peruvian products.

“From Mincetur, we will continue to promote their supplies through capacity building, trade promotion and access to new markets,” he said.

The ministry took the opportunity to point out that in the country’s coastal region, grapes are the main agricultural export product, accounting for 17% of shipments in this production sector.

In this regard, the Ministry pointed out that the departments of Ica (southwest) and Piura (northwest), which account for 87% of shipments from the Andean country, were at the top of shipments last year, with 605 million and 488 million dollars, respectively.

Other regions that shipped their grapes abroad were Lambayeque with US$71 million, La Libertad with US$67 million and Arequipa with US$19 million.

The top destination countries for Peruvian grapes included the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Mexico, China and the Republic of Korea.
