What is the coldest place in Brazil?

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian territory is so large that we can find the most varied climates, but do you know which is the coldest place in Brazil? As incredible as it may seem, the country known for its heat has areas where the temperature quickly reaches negative values.

Brazil has by law recognized the National Capital of Cold, located in the southern region of the country. The small mountain town of Urupema, in Santa Catarina State, is famous for recording the lowest temperatures in Brazil.

The small town of Urupema in Santa Catarina is located in a mountainous region with an average altitude of 1,425 meters. Its climate is classified as temperate oceanic. It means that its winters are very cold, and its summers are cool.

During the height of summer, in February, the average temperature does not exceed 18°C, while in winter, the average temperature is around 8°C. That is just the average because temperatures there can plummet to well below absolute zero.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in Urupema was -8.9°C, according to Epagri/Ciram, the unit responsible for monitoring the weather in Santa Catarina. Given its altitude and geographical configuration, surrounded by mountains, the small town can face several days below zero during the winter.

Due to Urupema’s height, it is common to record frost throughout the year and snow on some extremely cold days during the winter.

So famous for its cold, the municipality of Urupema was officially named the National Capital of Cold through Law No. 14.255 of November 30, 2021, which became effective on the same date of its publication.

THE FIVE COLDEST PLACES IN BRAZIL

Most of the coldest places in Brazil are located in the country’s southern region. Besides Urupema, the five coldest places in Brazil:

• Bom Jardim da Serra, SC: located in Santa Catarina, the municipality of Bom Jardim da Serra lies at an average altitude, about 1,245 meters, whose lowest temperature ever recorded marked -7.4°C. In summer, the average temperature does not exceed 22°C, and in winter, around 7.9°C;
• São Joaquim, SC: once again, Santa Catarina appears in the list of the coldest places in Brazil, now represented by the town of São Joaquim, located at an average altitude of 1,324 meters. Its average annual temperature is 13.5°C. In summer, the thermometer registers an average of 18°C, while in winter it stays around 9.8°C. Its record low is -7.2°C;
• Cambara do Sul, RS: located at an average altitude of 1,031 meters, the municipality of Cambará do Sul has an average annual temperature of 15°C. In summer, the average maximum temperature does not exceed 19°C, while the average minimum temperature is 10°C. Its lowest temperature ever recorded is -7.2°C, which puts it next to São Joaquim;
• Urubici, SC: the city of Urubici is often referred to as one of the coldest destinations in Brazil and even with an average altitude of 918 meters, the temperatures can be as low as the previous destinations. The lowest temperature ever recorded is -6.5°C. The average summer temperature is 18°C, and the average winter temperature is around 10°C;
• São José dos Ausentes, RS: with an average altitude of 1,200 meters, the city of São José dos Ausentes, in Rio Grande do Sul, is known as one of the coldest places in Brazil. Its average annual temperature is 14°C. In summer, it does not exceed 22°C, and in winter, it is around 6°C. Its lowest temperature was -5.5°C.
