Brazil: Lula recognizes the difficulty to govern and says the left wing has “at most, 136 votes in the Chamber”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) acknowledged on Friday (2) that he has difficulty governing with the left-wing base he currently has in the Chamber as a reflection of the week’s vote that almost made him lose the current configuration of the Esplanade of Ministries.

Although he had changes in assignments, the president secured the 37 portfolios rather than return to Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) 23.

“The entire left has at most 136 votes if no one is missing.”

“We, to vote a simple thing, need 257 votes.”

“And to approve a constitutional amendment, the number of representatives we need is even bigger,” he said at an event in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo.

Lula also said he has been making an “effort to govern” about the intense political articulations he has been demanding.

The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), specifically demanded he negotiates with parliamentarians and no longer only with interlocutors.

“It’s not just about winning an election. You win an election, and then you need to spend the whole time talking to see if you can approve something,” he stressed.
