Bolsonaro says Biden, Macron, Johnson and Trudeau are cornering Brazil over Amazon
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said that the leaders of the United States (Joe Biden), France (Emmanuel Macron), Canada (Justin Trudeau), and the United Kingdom (Boris Johnson) “corner Brazil all the time” over the Amazon.
In an interview on Friday (20), the head of state defended his visit to Russia on the eve of the start of the war with Ukraine, saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin has always expressed himself in the sense that the Amazon forest is a matter that must be dealt with sovereignly by Brazil.
In the statements made available to a YouTube channel, Bolsonaro took the opportunity to point out how certain heads of state of leading Western nations are on the offensive toward Brazil over the Amazon. “Macron, Biden, Trudeau, Johnson, and others berate us all the time, saying that we don’t know how to deal with the Amazon.”
The president also said the outside criticism was due to efforts to “leave Brazil in the background” in the commodities market. “We have raw materials here, especially in the countryside. And we compete with some important countries.”
“Some countries are interested in leaving us in the background because the fewer products that come to the market, the more valuable they are. France, the United States, a little Australia, which does not have much influence and does not work against us.”
This is not the first time Bolsonaro has pointed to the machinations of these heads of state, especially Biden and Macron. In October, he said the U.S. president was “obsessed with the environmental issue.”
“I, for one, am open and willing to continue discussions with the U.S. government. Obviously, the Biden administration is a rather left-leaning administration obsessed only with the environmental issue, which hampers us a little bit,” he said.
Referring to the French leader, Bolsnaro noted that Macron was interfering with Brazil’s sovereign affairs regarding the handling of the Amazon.
The criticism of Biden comes when the president must decide whether to travel to Los Angeles in early June to attend the Summit of the Americas, which the United States is organizing for the ninth time.
According to Bolsonaro’s interlocutors, the current trend is for him not to travel and focus on domestic issues in Brazil, mainly because of the proximity of the electoral calendar.
