Argentina drew 1-1 with Colombia in Buenos Aires on June 10, 2025, in a World Cup qualifying match, according to official match reports and statistics. The result reflected the high stakes for both teams.

Argentina, already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, used the game to test squad depth and maintain momentum. Colombia, fighting for direct qualification, needed points to avoid slipping into the playoff zone.

Luis Díaz gave Colombia a surprise lead in the 24th minute. He received the ball in his own half, dribbled past four Argentine defenders, and scored past Emiliano Martínez.

Colombia played with determination, knowing a win would almost secure their World Cup spot. However, the team arrived under pressure, having not won in five previous matches.

Argentina controlled possession, holding 64 percent of the ball, but struggled to break Colombia’s defense. The game turned in the 70th minute when Enzo Fernández received a red card for a high boot that struck Kevin Castaño.

The incident left Argentina with ten men and increased tension on the field, leading to several heated exchanges. Lionel Messi, starting for the first time since November 2024, showed signs of fatigue and left the pitch in the 78th minute.

Despite his absence, Argentina equalized in the 81st minute. Thiago Almada found space in the box and shot into the far corner, beating Colombian goalkeeper Kevin Mier.

Argentina’s late goal extended their unbeaten home record and confirmed their position at the top of the South American standings with 35 points from 16 matches. Colombia, now with 22 points, remains sixth in the standings, the last direct qualification spot.

The team’s winless run now stands at six games, putting pressure on the final two matches in September. Failure to secure more points could force Colombia into an intercontinental playoff, a risk for both the team and its football federation.

This result matters for business and football because World Cup qualification brings significant financial rewards, including sponsorships, broadcast rights, and tourism revenue.

For Argentina, maintaining form supports their brand as world champions. For Colombia, direct qualification means stability and planning for the future. The match showed how on-field results directly impact national football economies and future investments.
