America Regulates Stablecoins, Paving the Way for Secure Digital Dollars

The United States has set new ground rules for digital money. On July 18, 2025, President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law.

It requires companies that issue stablecoins—a type of cryptocurrency tied closely to the U.S. dollar—to prove those coins are fully backed by real cash and short-term government bonds.

This law comes after years of confusion and rapid growth in digital asset markets. Stablecoins now total over $260 billion in value, and if confidence holds, experts say this could rise to $2 trillion by 2028.

The U.S. now demands clearer, stronger public reporting from the firms behind these coins, addressing past fears that some stablecoins lacked the assets to match what they promised users.

For American policymakers, this move aims to keep the dollar powerful and relevant as money and payments turn digital. Treasury officials say the law will attract more global investment and keep the U.S. dollar central in payments worldwide.

Crypto industry groups spent hundreds of millions lobbying for these rules, seeking legal certainty and respect for stablecoin technology.

Recent laws also ended a long turf fight between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over who polices digital assets.

At the same time, Congress banned the Federal Reserve from creating its own government-run digital dollar, a decision dividing privacy advocates and financial reformers.

American crypto markets continue to boom. Digital asset values topped $4 trillion worldwide this year, with U.S. investors and companies at the forefront.

Major coins like bitcoin, ether, and dogecoin see major price swings, reflecting fast-evolving use and speculation. Lawmakers remain divided. Some warn that big tech and finance firms may gain too much power over payments.

Others argue the U.S. has to keep pace as digital finance matures. With the GENIUS Act, Washington wants stablecoins and the wider crypto market to grow under clear, enforceable rules.

The stakes are high: keeping U.S. financial leadership in a digital future depends on getting these new rules right.
