The Silent Crisis: Abductions of Coptic Christian Women in Egypt

In 2024, the troubling trend of Coptic Christian women disappearing in Egypt drew attention to a serious crisis. Julia Atef, a 21-year-old Coptic woman, was kidnapped on October 26 while heading to a church event near Cairo.

Her family quickly reported her missing, but local authorities have made little effort to find her. Similarly, Irene Ibrahim Shehata vanished in January while attending classes at Assyut National University.

When her family sought help, they encountered indifference from the police. These disappearances are part of a larger issue affecting Copts in Egypt. This Christian community makes up about 10% of the population, numbering between 4.7 million and over 10 million.

They have faced discrimination and violence for centuries. Since the Arab conquest in the 7th century, Copts have endured forced conversions and attacks on their churches.

The Egyptian constitution identifies Islam as the state religion and incorporates Sharia law, which further marginalizes non-Muslims. Reports indicate that between 2011 and 2014 alone, over 550 young Christian women and girls were kidnapped.

Many of them were subjected to sexual abuse and coerced into conversion to Islam. Families often feel pressured to remain silent due to fear of retaliation from both kidnappers and authorities.

This silence complicates efforts to understand the full scope of the problem. The lack of accountability for these crimes raises serious concerns about the safety of vulnerable populations.

After Irene Shehata’s kidnapping, her family received threats against attempting a rescue. Such incidents reveal a systemic failure within law enforcement to protect citizens.

Despite the severity of these issues, the plight of Copts has received little attention from international communities. Advocacy groups like Coptic Solidarity have called for action from U.S. officials to address these kidnappings.

In short, they have also demanded accountability from Egyptian authorities. However, these appeals often go unheard.
