Tesla and Elon Musk Tease Imminent Robotaxi Launch in Austin

Tesla and CEO Elon Musk have set the stage for a major milestone in autonomous vehicles, hinting on X that the company will launch its first robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, on June 22.

Musk confirmed the date as tentative, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority and that the timeline could shift if needed. The announcement follows the appearance of a viral video showing a Tesla Model Y, marked with a “Robotaxi” logo, operating without a driver on Austin’s public roads.

Musk and Tesla’s Autopilot chief both shared the video, underscoring that these are standard vehicles from the factory, equipped for unsupervised self-driving.

The initial rollout will involve a small fleet of 10 to 20 Model Y vehicles, which will operate within geo-fenced areas of Austin. Tesla employees will monitor the cars remotely, ensuring oversight as the service begins.

Musk has stated that, if successful, the company will expand robotaxi operations to other major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Antonio.

The first instance of a Tesla autonomously delivering itself from the factory to a customer’s home is scheduled for June 28, further demonstrating the company’s confidence in its Full Self-Driving technology.
