Swiss citizens vote for carbon neutrality by 2050 in referendum

By · June 19, 2023 · 2 min read

On June 18, 2023, a majority of Swiss voters in a referendum agreed to the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

This decision comes in light of the growing effects of global warming in Switzerland, including significant glacial melting.

Final results showed 59.1% of voters endorsing a law that mandates a drastic reduction in the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and the promotion of eco-friendly alternatives.

The approved proposal encompasses a financial aid package exceeding 3.2 billion Euros over 10 years.

This package aims to facilitate a transition from gas or oil heating systems to alternatives with lower emissions and foster technological innovation among businesses.

Carbon neutrality, or climate neutrality, implies a state where the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere is equal to or less than the amount being removed.

In a concurrent referendum, 78.5% of voters were in favor of a 15% tax on large multinational corporations.

The turnout for both referendums was approximately 42%.

Although the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) cautioned about potential negative economic impacts, recent surveys indicated substantial public support for the carbon neutrality initiative.

Supporters of the “Federal Law on Climate Protection Goals, Innovation, and Strengthening of Energy Security” argue that the legislation is necessary for energy security and for addressing the impacts of climate change, demonstrated by the considerable glacial volume loss in the Swiss Alps.
