SLC Agrícola Expands Operations Through Strategic US$135 Million Acquisition
Reuters reported that SLC Agrícola announced Thursday an agreement to purchase Sierentz Agro Brasil for US$135 million (R$780 million/$130 million).
The deal expands SLC’s geographical footprint and increases planted area by 13% for the upcoming 2024/25 harvest. SLC structured the payment in three installments: 60% at closing, 20% on April 30, 2026, and 20% on April 30, 2027.
The acquisition includes all machinery and equipment currently used in Sierentz’s operations. Sierentz operates exclusively on 96,000 hectares of leased land across three northern Brazilian states.
The distribution comprises 68,000 hectares in Maranhão, 18,000 hectares in Piauí, and 10,000 hectares in Pará. These agricultural properties offer significant potential for second crops.
This capability could expand the total planted area to approximately 135,000 hectares. Lease agreements average 9.3 sacks of soybeans per hectare annually with a 13-year average term.
SLC plans to maintain soybean and corn production initially on these lands. The company will introduce cotton cultivation beginning in the third year of operations.
SLC Agrícola Expands Through Strategic Acquisition
The acquisition aligns with SLC’s strategy to diversify geographically and reduce exposure to regional climate risks. Leased areas will represent 66.5% of the company’s physical land portfolio after the transaction completes.
As part of the arrangement, Terrus S.A. already has a binding offer for 33,000 hectares. This secondary transaction requires a spin-off of Sierentz and carries a value of R$191.2 million/$32 million.
After this partial divestment, SLC will directly manage 63,000 physical hectares. This translates to approximately 100,000 hectares of planted area when accounting for multiple crop cycles.
SLC expects to assume operational control by July 1, 2025. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals, including clearance from Brazil’s antitrust authority CADE.
Founded in 1977, SLC Agrícola pioneered standardized agricultural production across multiple Brazilian farms. The company utilizes crop rotation systems with cotton, soybeans, and corn to maintain soil fertility and optimize production efficiency.
The acquisition reinforces SLC’s position as one of Brazil’s largest agricultural producers. This expansion comes amid challenging conditions in Brazilian agribusiness markets.
