Santa Catarina city reports most dengue-related deaths in Brazil in 2023
Joinville, the largest municipality in Santa Catarina, is the city in Brazil that has reported the highest number of dengue-related deaths in 2023.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, as of July 25th, there have been 33 fatalities from the disease in the city, which is located in the northern part of the state.
In 2023, Santa Catarina state experienced a surge in dengue cases, surpassing the total cases reported in the previous year.
The Directorate of Epidemiological Surveillance (Dive) revealed that as of July 24, there have been 96,040 cases, compared to 83,276 cases for the whole previous year.
Moreover, 89 dengue-related deaths were confirmed in 2023, and six more are currently under investigation.
Last year, the disease claimed the lives of 90 individuals in Santa Catarina.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito is responsible for transmitting dengue.
In response to the situation, João Augusto Brancher Fuck, the director of Dive, emphasized the importance of seeking healthcare for those experiencing symptoms.
Joinville, in an effort to combat the disease, maintains continuous actions, including house visits by endemic agents.
Additionally, professionals inspect strategic locations such as scrapyards and recycling centers, where the risk of mosquito breeding is higher.
Fabiana Almeida, the director of the Municipal Health Secretariat, stated that by understanding the municipality’s epidemiological profile, they can implement targeted actions based on mosquito breeding locations and affected patients.
Joinville remains committed to dengue prevention throughout the year, utilizing various strategies tailored to specific neighborhood or area needs.
