Six Months Out, the Drums Are Already Loud

Carnival 2027 may look far away, but Rio’s samba schools never really stop. Rehearsals for the next parade season now fill the city’s weeks and weekends.

The parades themselves are set for February 7 to 9, 2027, at the Marquês de Sapucaí Sambadrome. The official running order was drawn in April, so every school already knows its slot.

A quadra is the school’s home base, part clubhouse and part dance hall. On rehearsal nights it turns into one of the best parties in Rio.

For visitors, this is the insider season. You get the drums, the dancers and the sweat, without the February crowds and prices.

Champions, Newcomers and Big Themes

Viradouro arrives as the reigning champion after winning Carnival 2026 with a tribute to its own drum master, Mestre Ciça. The pressure is on to defend the crown.

Freshly promoted União de Maricá opens the Sunday parades after winning the second-tier Série Ouro. Vice-champion Beija-Flor follows with “Zeneida: o sopro do pó de louro”, honoring the Marajoara healer and writer Zeneida Lima.

Mocidade opens Monday night, and Portela kicks off Tuesday. Each school gets about 75 minutes on the avenue to win over the judges.

Mangueira closes the whole show on Tuesday night with “Oyá por nós”, a tribute to the Afro-Brazilian deity of winds and storms. Grande Rio parades just before it, which makes Tuesday the blockbuster evening.

Where the Rehearsals Happen

Every top school runs a weekly rehearsal at its quadra, the headquarters that doubles as a dance hall. Mangueira and Beija-Flor traditionally play Thursdays, Portela Wednesdays, and Imperatriz Fridays, while Viradouro and Grande Rio go on Tuesdays.

Vila Isabel alternates between quadra and street on Wednesdays, and Mocidade drums on Thursdays at its Padre Miguel quadra. Unidos da Tijuca drums on Thursday nights near the Sambadrome.

Some schools take the drums to the streets instead. Salgueiro rehearses Thursday nights on the streets of Andaraí, and Paraíso do Tuiuti takes over the São Cristóvão area on Mondays.

Weekend visitors get their turn on Sundays. Acadêmicos de Niterói, the proud school from across the bay now rebuilding in the second division, rehearses Sunday afternoons in the open air.

Samba School Rehearsals for Visitors

Quadra nights are open to everyone and usually charge a modest entry fee at the door. Think of them less as practice and more as a weekly festival with hundreds of drummers, singers and dancers.

Expect the full spectacle: the thundering bateria drum section, the flag-bearing couple gliding across the floor, and passista dancers with impossible footwork. The crowd sings the school’s anthem word for word.

Schedules live on each school’s social media, so check before you go. Nights start late and peak well after midnight.

The quadras sit in working-class neighborhoods far from the beach zones. Going with a local friend or a registered taxi is the comfortable choice for a first visit.

The Road to February

In mid-April the league held its official draw at the Cidade do Samba, where champion Viradouro proudly displayed its trophy. Singer Dudu Nobre performed, and every school learned its parade order for the year.

From January, the action shifts to the Sambadrome itself, where technical rehearsals traditionally run on weekends before Carnival. Entry to those is free, which makes them the city’s best bargain.

The children’s mirim schools open the 2027 season on January 23, 24 and 30, with a closing night on February 12. Then come the three big parades of February 7 to 9, with four schools each evening.

Until then, every quadra night is a small step toward the avenue. For the schools, February is the exam; August is the joyful homework.

The Schools and Their Neighborhoods

Each school carries the flag of its home turf. Mangueira, in green and pink, is the pride of the hill behind Maracanã stadium.

Portela, in blue and white, represents Oswaldo Cruz in the north zone and holds a record 22 titles. Champion Viradouro flies in from across the bay in Niterói.

Grande Rio speaks for Duque de Caxias in the Baixada Fluminense, far from the postcard beaches. Visiting a quadra means seeing the Rio that tourists rarely meet.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Rio’s Carnival 2027?

Can tourists join samba school rehearsals in Rio?
