LIVE:
Bossa @ Oscar (Leblon) – Sundays are the day for a weekly musical session at Oscar’s bistro in Leblon.

This week it’s the turn of the Sergio Brandão quartet with their unique blend of bossa nova and MPB (Popular Brazilian Music from the sixties, seventies and eighties) instrumental music.

The composer and guitarist Sergio Brandão returns to the bistro with a quartet including Jefferson Lescowich (double bass) and two very special guests – Fernando Brandao (flute) and Marcelo Martins (sax)

Fernando Brandão, as a young man, was the winner of numerous classical music contests in Brazil, and the 1991 Pappoutsakis Flute Competition in the USA. He is also an accomplished jazz musician and composer, and was a professor at the Berklee College of Music for more than twenty years.

Veteran Marcelo Martins is one of the most exuberant and sought-after saxophonists in Rio de Janeiro, having participated in concerts and recordings with Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa and Roberto Carlos, among others.

Jefferson Lescowich is a bassist with exceptional technical ability and unmistakable swing.

Together, their sound presents a mix of folk and urban roots from MPB, in unconventional free forms, and rich harmonic color, characteristic of contemporary jazz.

The evening of music will last from 6:30-9:30 PM and there is an artistic cover charge of R$15.

DRINKS:
2 Anos @ Hocus Pocus DNA (Botafogo) – This Sunday is the two year anniversary of DNA craft brewery.

There’s a big party in store, with a lot of generous offers on behalf of the DNA crew.

There will be ‘Stout Experimental I,’ with peach, coffee beans and cocoa nibs, and ‘Stout Experimental II,’ a Mexican stout with pepper, chocolate and cinnamon. The two were served only at the Craft Beer Festival, with no plans to be produced again.

There will also be a discount of R$2 off all line chopps (Magic Trap, Pandora, APA Cadabra, Interstellar and Hush).

There is also a raffle for those who come to celebrate with the team at DNA! Every real spent here on Sunday will be in with a chance to win, that is, if you spend R$50, you have fifty chances to win.

This evening of drinks will commence at around 5PM. It’s free entry and the winner of the competition will be announced on Monday, August 20th.

LIVE:
24th Rio Cello @ Grand Hyatt Rio (Barra da Tijuca) – Rio Cello is a festival of classical music that brings together various names of national and international music, with presentations and workshops in various parts of Rio de Janeiro.

Supporting the initiative, Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro will host one of its 24th edition presentations and will also offer a charity event, featuring sunset cocktail, orchestra and dinner in style for participants to have an extraordinary experience. All profits will be donated to the Gastromotiva Reffetorio.

The theme is ‘Come West for West Side Story’ and the music is directed by David Chew. There will be a New York style dinner served in the Tano restaurant, with invited chefs from the NGO Rio Gastronomia.

The evening begins at 5PM and tickets are available from R$175 per person.

Roda de Choro do Grapiúna @ Fuska (Humaitá) – Come and enjoy an excellent Sunday of choro (instrumental music similar to samba) in Humaita.

The music begins at 6PM and everyone is invited. Friends and family are all welcome to enjoy this great communal experience.

It will be taking place on the street, on the sidewalk, in the bar, wherever there are people.

Commanding the roda (circle) is the Conjunto Grapiúna, formed by Pablo Abdelhay (flute), Fernando Mattoso (guitar 7 strings), Marcos Tannuri (cavaquinho) and Nelson Léo (tambourine).

Musicians are naturally invited to join this party and play with them.

A voluntary contribution of R$5 is very welcome to keep this night going.

With chilled out vibes during the week and a selection of top DJs playing shows at the weekends, the newly-opened Yndú Lounge in Ipanema is a great option to kick back. With a selection of drinks and tapas, the bar is quickly becoming one of Leblon’s best watering holes.

Blue Agave (Ipanema)
Just around the corner from Posto 9, Blue Agave Ipanema is also known for its mostly English-speaking staff and the international crowd which frequents the establishment. Be sure to check out Blue Agave in Copacabana also for a great night out.
