Record Internet Use in Brazil, Surpassing Past Years

In 2022, Brazil witnessed a significant surge in internet usage, with the IBGE reporting that 87.2% of Brazilians accessed the internet.

Their survey started in 2016. However, they paused it in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The survey showed that 161.6 million people in Brazil used the internet. Most of them, 93.4%, used it every day.

This is more than in 2021. Back then, 155.7 million people, or 84.7% of Brazilians, were online.

Older people, especially those over 60, showed a big increase in internet use. This group had the lowest use rate before.

An analyst from IBGE, Gustavo Geaquinto, said that older people are using the internet more. He thinks it’s because it’s easier to use now.

In different parts of Brazil, internet use varies. The Central-West region has the most users. This is partly because of the Distrito Federal, where 96.6% of people use the internet.

The North and Northeast regions have fewer users. But they are catching up fast. Homes with internet also reached a new high in 2022.

Now, 91.5% of homes have it. This is a small jump from 2021, when 90% of homes had internet.

In cities, 89.4% of people use the internet. In rural areas, 72.7% do. People without formal education are less likely to use the internet. Only 39.4% of them go online.

People in Brazil mostly use mobile phones to access the internet. Almost 99% do this. TV is the second most used device.

In 2016, only 11.3% used TV for the internet. By 2022, this grew to 47.5%. On the other hand, fewer people are using computers and tablets now.

The survey also looked at how often people use the internet. Most people, 93.4%, use it every day. A few, 2.7%, use it almost every day.

Some, 3.2%, use it a few times a week. Very few, only 0.7%, use it less than once a week. In the North region, daily use is lowest at 89.2%.

In the Central-West, it’s highest at 95.0%.
