Heatwave Continues in Brazil, Setting New Records

Brazil has recorded a new peak in average temperatures for the fourth consecutive month, as reported by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

From July to October, temperatures rose over one degree Celsius above normal.

Inmet’s research showed October’s average temperature was 26.4 °C. This is 1.2 °C more than the usual October average of 25.2 °C.

Inmet pointed out September’s temperature was the most above normal since 1961. It was 1.6 °C higher than the average from 1991 to 2020.

The average temperature in September was 25.8 °C. This is higher than the past average of 24.2 °C.

In August, the average was 24.3 °C. This was 1.4 °C more than the past average of 22.9 °C. In July, the average was 23 °C.

It was over 1 °C higher than the past average of 21.9 °C.

Inmet said these months had a lot of heat and heatwaves. This is because of El Niño. El Niño usually makes temperatures go up in many places.

The world is getting warmer in some places and colder in others. This includes the land and the sea. This natural change is making extreme weather happen more often.

Inmet believes 2023 might be the hottest year since the 1960s. Other weather groups agree.

They say the rest of the year will probably stay hot. This trend is seen all over the world until November.

Because of this, Inmet warned of a new heatwave. It will hit Brazil’s inner parts. The heat is expected to last for a while.

Brazil’s climate is mostly tropical. This means it’s usually warm and wet. But, the country’s vast size brings diverse weather.

Brazil has five main climate regions. Each region has its own weather patterns.

El Niño is a natural climate pattern. It happens when the Pacific Ocean gets warmer than usual. This affects the weather around the world.

El Niño often brings more rain and warmer temperatures to some areas.

Background

Brazil has faced many heat waves in the past. They can cause droughts and fires. These are big problems for farming and water supply.

Brazil is one of the world’s largest agricultural producers.

Climate change is making heat waves more frequent and intense. This is true worldwide, including in Brazil.

Things like burning fossil fuels cause climate change. It leads to global warming.

Scientists are studying how to deal with these changes. They look at ways to reduce harm and adapt to new climates. This is important for the future of countries like Brazil.
