Today, protests over local election results in Mozambique resulted in 10 injuries and 70 arrests, according to police.
In Nampula, a northern city, nine civilians and one officer got hurt but are now safe.
Out of the 70 arrested, most were in Nampula. Others were in Nacala Porto, another northern city.
Additionally, four were in the southern city of Maputo, and two in central Quelimane. All arrested now face legal action.
Police also fired tear gas in Maputo to disperse crowds. Spokesperson Orlando Modumane said the police had to restore order.
They cited reasons like barricades, tire-burning, and window-smashing in cities where protests happened.
Modumane emphasized that the police respect the right to protest. However, he urged all political parties to follow the law.
A local NGO reported a police agent and a young person died, but police have not confirmed this yet.
In these elections, 65 municipalities voted, including 12 new ones. The ruling party, Frelimo, won in most places, while the third-largest party, MDM, only won in Beira.
Opposition parties, mainly Renamo, protest these results nationwide. Renamo and MDM leaders pledged to fight for democracy, claiming the elections were fraudulent.
