Police Crack Down on Rio Favelas to Stop Crime

A thousand police officers entered three major favelas in Rio de Janeiro, to curb escalating crime rates.

The state government publicized this large operation, specifically targeting neighborhoods like Complexo da Maré and Cidade de Deus.

Early in the day, police cars assembled at the favelas’ entrances. Armed officers, accompanied by sniffer dogs, patrolled the nearly deserted streets.

The famous favela, Cidade de Deus, was also included in this sweep. By noon, police had arrested nine individuals, seized drugs, and recovered stolen vehicles.

They also removed barricades erected by criminals. During the operation, assailants shot at two police helicopters.

To improve coordination, police employed drones and wearable cameras to feed real-time data to a control center.

This operation aimed to dismantle the influence of Comando Vermelho, a dominant drug gang.

According to Renato Torres, a senior police official, the goal is to prevent this criminal organization from expanding and clashing with rival gangs.

Rio has long struggled with high crime, particularly in impoverished areas.

Recent incidents include robberies and homicides, prompting the government to commit approximately $180 million over three years to tackle crime.

However, critics argue that such police interventions endanger civilians and fail to address the root causes of organized crime. Previous operations have resulted in multiple fatalities.
