Peru appeals to the population to make a political reform

The Government of Dina Boluarte launched a platform so that Peruvian citizens can make their contributions and suggestions for the political reform prior to the 2024 general elections and thereby increase representation in the process.

The Executive Branch and the Constitutional Commission of Congress debate the legislative and electoral changes necessary for the political reform process prior to the 2024 elections, consulting various political actors and experts. Added to this was the platform launched by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (MINJUSDH) for citizens to collaborate with their proposals.

The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, José Tello, tweeted about the launch of the platform to welcome citizen opinion.

“Making reforms requires everyone’s contribution. That is why […] we will receive your ideas, proposals and comments on what legal and constitutional changes we must formulate to improve our democracy. Be part of the change,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

The political reform ahead of the 2024 elections seeks to “optimize the principles of representativeness, the fight against corruption and transparency, and strengthen the balance of powers, as well as guarantee governability” in Peru, says the press release from the ministry.

Citizens will be able to formulate their queries and contributions for these purposes both by email and on the MINJUSDH portal.

Likewise, Minister Tello has been holding meetings with different specialists and academics who contribute to the political reform proposals that the Government will present. Through dialogue and the contributions of the different civil and political actors, consensus is sought to achieve “better representation and governability,” said the representative of the Executive.

The proposals will be debated by Congress with the aim of being approved in the first months of this year, if the constitutional reform to advance the elections to 2024 is finally ratified by the legislative body, something that could happen in the Second Ordinary Legislature of the period 2022-2023, which begins on March 1.

On December 20, the Peruvian Congress approved a bill to bring forward the general elections to April 2024. Bringing forward the elections has been one of the demands of the demonstrations against the Government of Dina Boluarte and the Congress that began after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo on December 7.

“The idea of listening to different opinions in the shortest possible time is to identify the proposals with the greatest impact for the Peruvian political system,” said congressman Hernando Guerra García (Popular Force, right), who chairs the Constitution Commission of Congress, the group of work in charge of evaluating the constitutional reforms to hold the elections, according to the slogan Peru 21.
