In a recent announcement, Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, revealed ambitious plans.

He aims for the country to have almost complete internet coverage by 2024. This goal aligns with the end of his term in office.

He shared these details at his daily press conference.

President López Obrador explained that internet services would reach over 94% of Mexico’s residents by next year.

This coverage will impact around 126 million people. He stressed the importance of this development for the nation. He believes it will significantly aid Mexico’s progress.

The Federal Electricity Commission, a government entity, leads this project. It focuses on providing both mobile internet and telephony services.

Additionally, it offers free access points across the country. The Mexican government currently operates 8,616 mobile telephony towers.

According to the “Internet for All” initiative, this number will grow to 12,629 by 2024. The country’s fiber optic network also shows impressive growth.

It currently spans 11,411 kilometers and will expand to 22,728 kilometers by year-end.

President López Obrador emphasized the benefits of these services. He mentioned their key roles in improving education and health care.

The World Bank highlights a notable point. While mobile internet is common in Latin America, some areas still lack sufficient coverage.

Mexico’s plan aims to address and reduce this disparity.

Background

Mexico’s initiative sets a benchmark in the region. It showcases a significant leap in digital infrastructure development.

Many Latin American countries grapple with similar challenges. They strive to increase internet access among their populations.

Mexico’s approach could serve as a model for others.

Historically, internet access in Latin America has been uneven. Rural and remote areas often lag behind urban centers in connectivity.

Mexico’s comprehensive plan aims to bridge this digital divide. By enhancing internet access, the country looks to boost its overall development.

This move could have a lasting impact on its economic and social growth.

The plan also aligns with global trends. Increasingly, nations recognize the importance of internet connectivity.

It’s essential for modern economies and societies. Mexico’s commitment to near-total coverage reflects an understanding of this global shift.

In comparison, similar initiatives have been successful in other parts of the world. For example, some European countries have achieved high levels of internet penetration.

This success has translated into economic and educational advantages. Mexico’s strategy mirrors these successful models, adapting them to its unique context.
