Mexican Stock Market Slides as Tariff Pressure and Technical Signals Weigh
The latest market close, tracked by official charts and exchange data, revealed the Mexican S&P/BMV IPC dropped 0.58% to 55,517.81 pesos.
Tense negotiations on US tariffs and cautious central bank policy dominated trading activity in Mexico City and cast a shadow over local sentiment. Both domestic and global factors pressured equities throughout the last 24 hours.
Investors responded to US threats of higher tariffs on Mexican exports, a move that would hurt manufacturers, carmakers and other export-heavy industries.
The Mexican peso recovered marginally from lows, but the uncertainty around new trade barriers dampened local risk appetite. Bank of Mexico minutes, released earlier, showed policymakers unwilling to cut rates aggressively due to sticky underlying inflation.
This stance kept market participants on edge, waiting for signals of economic flexibility. Trading volumes stayed below average. Foreign investors pulled funds from Mexican-focused ETFs, which echoed the caution of global peers.

The iShares MSCI Mexico ETF registered outflows, reflecting widespread risk aversion. Measurement against other emerging market peers, such as Brazil’s Bovespa or the Chilean IPSA, showed the IPC underperformed regionally.
While US and Asian indices gained on robust tech earnings and improving global liquidity, Mexico’s tariff exposure and internal headwinds left it vulnerable. The resilience of US equities did not translate south of the border.
Technical analysis of the daily chart displayed multiple warning flags. The IPC broke below key support levels near 55,600 as downward pressure built. The 20-day and 50-day simple moving averages turned flat to negative, signaling the end of upward momentum.
MACD readings remained in negative territory, highlighting persistent weakness and a strong bearish trend. The RSI hovered just above 40, nearing oversold but not quite offering reversal signals.
Bollinger Bands widened, with prices leaning toward the lower band—volatility increased while upside attempts failed. On the four-hour chart, price actions retested support at 55,524 before modest rebounds.
Short-term moving averages stayed below long-term averages, maintaining bearish momentum. Volume analysis confirmed this was not a panic-driven selloff but a steady unwinding with modest trading interest, lacking conviction for a reversal.
The Global Liquidity Index, shown as the yellow line in the chart, faded during the session. This indicated a tightening flow of funds, which contributed to the broad-based selloff and highlighted the hesitancy of capital allocators in the current environment.
The top gainers on the day included Grupo México, which edged up 0.94% as metals demand remained solid. America Movil also showed resilience, buoyed by regional performance.
Wal-Mart de México sustained the heaviest losses, falling 7% after disappointing retail sector data. Megacable Holdings also slipped over 3%, and FibraHotel continued its decline.
The past day demonstrated a market hampered by global and local factors, unable to break through heavy resistance. Investors will keep watching policy developments and trade negotiations to gauge when confidence—and inflows—might return.
