Lula in New York for UN and Biden Talks

Brazil’s President Lula arrived in New York on Saturday for the 78th UN General Assembly next week.

A meeting with U.S. President Biden is also on his agenda. A dinner with lawmakers and business leaders is planned.

Lula arrived with his spouse, Janja da Silva. Earlier, he went to a G77 summit. China was a special guest there. At the summit, Lula criticized U.S. sanctions against Cuba.

He also opposed Cuba’s status as a terrorism sponsor. Cuba got back on this list in 2021. It had been removed in 2015.

Lula will meet Biden on Wednesday. Brazil usually gives the first speech at the UN Assembly. After the meeting, labor rights initiatives will be announced.

Lula said the plan with Biden aims to boost jobs. Luiz Marinho, Brazil’s Labor Minister, agrees.

The proposal will spark talks on work conditions, child labor, and slave-like labor.

On Sunday, Lula will join a dinner hosted by CNI and Fiesp. Ministers, legislators, and high-ranking officials will attend.

Twelve other ministers will also be in New York. They include leaders of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and Health.

This is Lula’s 14th trip abroad this year. He will return to Brazil on Friday. By then, he will have spent 56 days outside Brazil.
