López Obrador’s party wins the elections in the State of Mexico

Morena’s candidate in the State of Mexico, Delfina Gómez, has won this Sunday’s elections against her rival, Alejandra del Moral, of the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI), thus putting an end to more than 90 years of dominance of this formation, according to preliminary results.

The results of the quick count of the Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico have given Gómez between 52.1% and 54.2% of the ballots, while Del Moral has obtained between 43.0 and 46.2% of the votes.

“The transformation begins today in Edomex, thanks to all. Your vote not only marks a watershed but brings hope to our land. We won together, and so we will build together a prosperous and dignified future for the people of Mexico,” said Gomez.

However, both gubernatorial candidates declared themselves winners of the elections at the closing of the polling stations.

The PRI candidate has subsequently accepted defeat after learning the quick count results.

“I salute teacher Delfina Gómez Álvarez, who will be the next governor of the State of Mexico, and I wish her every success.”

“To win, you have to know how to lose,” she expressed, as the Mexican newspaper El Universal reported.

“I pledged to respect the electoral authority and recognize the results.”

“The quick count and the preliminary results do not favor me, and I recognize the democratic character of the Mexican people”, she added.

After these declarations, Gómez maintained that he salutes “the recognition of the electoral results by Alejandra del Moral”.

“Respect for democracy is an indispensable condition to build the State of Mexico of well-being for all,” she said.

Morena has achieved, by achieving victory in one of the last great bastions of the opposition, additional power before the general elections of June 2024, to which López Obrador will not run since the Mexican Constitution limits presidents to a single mandate.
