Indigenous Land Causes Ungovernability in Brazil, Says Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said that Brazil is “almost ungovernable when it comes to reserves. The intention of these great reserves, and this has always been discussed at the UN, is that, for the self-determination of indigenous peoples, they would be new countries in the future”.

The statement occurred in an interview with actress and Youtuber Antonia Fontenelle, the president’s supporter on social networks, recorded on Friday, August 30th, and released on Monday, September 2nd.

The president again stated that countries “such as Germany, in particular,” were “buying Brazil via the Amazon Fund”. He also said that the international crisis due to the fires was a difficult moment: “This blow from the ‘captain of the Amazon’ was a heavy blow”.

According to Bolsonaro, the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, “messed with the dignity” of the Amazon countries. “Criticism of Brazil was circumvented by articulation with other nations, such as the U.S. When the G-7 summit began, Macron was isolated”.

The president said that Amazonian countries should draw up a “joint note” on the crisis in the region, in addition to reaffirming that “we have the right to, and will, sustainably exploit the Amazon region”.

Bolsonaro once again stated that the candidate’s opinion on the environment and “minorities” will be decisive for his choice of the new Federal Presecutor General. “More and more Indian land is wanted. The next Attorney General has to have a score of 7 on everything. Not 10 in one (point) and 2 in the other,” he said.

The president also said that the list of three named candidates for the position is an “invention of the past” that he does not need to follow.

According to the president, there are three names under analysis for the leadership of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office. “Mrs. Raquel Dodge has already said that she would like to be re-elected,” he said, without pointing out if the current Prosecutor General is in the race.

The president also said that the wear and tear on Justice and Public Security Minister Sérgio Moro due to alleged interference in the Federal Police was “something artificial” and “potentiated” by the press.

Bolsonaro and Moro have already shown signs of a truce in the last week when they exchanged words at an event on the Plateau to launch a series of measures in the area of public safety.
