In a meeting with WikiLeaks editor, Lula da Silva declares support for Assange to be freed

President-elect Lula da Silva (PT) met on Monday (28) with the editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, the Icelandic journalist Kristinn Hrafnsson, and with the editor Joseph Farrell, in Brasília.

Hrafnsson has traveled to several countries in Latin America to ask for help for the release of the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, who is currently being held in the United Kingdom.

The United States requests his extradition. Before passing through Brazil, the Icelander had a meeting with the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro.

In Brazil, the journalist received support from the PT, who stated that Assange’s arrest is unfair.

“I was with Kristinn Hrafnsson, editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, and editor Joseph Farrell, who informed me of the health situation and struggle for freedom of Julian Assange. I asked them to send my solidarity. May Assange be released from his unjust prison”, wrote Lula da Silva.

Also on social media, Hrafnsson spoke about the meeting with the Brazilian president, stating that Lula would have declared that Assange’s arrest could harm press freedom in the world.

“Brazilian President-elect Lula da Silva expressed, in a private meeting this evening, his continued support for Julian Assange and the demand to end the persecution, understanding that doing so could undermine press freedom around the world. A true man of passion, vision and sympathy. Thank you Lula”, wrote the WikiLeaks editor.
