Immigration Drives Spain’s Population Toward New Milestones

By 2074, Spain expects to welcome nearly six million new residents, boosting its population to 54.6 million.

Immigration primarily fuels this increase, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

During this period, life expectancy will also rise, with men expected to live up to 86 years and women to 90, surpassing current averages.

This year, Spain saw a significant migration influx of 1,258,894 people, the highest in a decade, while 531,889 moved abroad.

This resulted in a net gain of 727,005 through migration. With more deaths than births projected, migration remains the key driver of population change.

Currently, 81.9% of Spain’s population is native-born. This is expected to drop to 61% over the next fifty years.

Additionally, the proportion of those aged 65 and older will increase from 20.4% to 30.3% by 2074. This shift introduces youthful energy into an aging demographic.

Although birth rates are low, a rebound is anticipated around 2058, spurred by younger generations reaching peak fertility. Despite this, the birth rate will not exceed the death rate

The Bank of Spain highlights the necessity for 24.6 million working-age immigrants by 2053 to support the pension system.
