Ibovespa Rises Amid Criticism of Central Bank Leadership

The Ibovespa started the second half of the year on a positive note, rising 0.65% to 124,718.07 points, adding 811.52 points.

Despite initial declines, the commercial dollar climbed 1.15% to R$ 5.65 ($1.01) by the day’s end.

Future interest rates increased, particularly in the short term, while international markets also showed gains.

In Brazil, fiscal policies remain a significant concern. President Lula reaffirmed that minimum wage policies will not change, causing market speculation about the cost of this commitment.

Economist estimates suggest that minimum wage increases could cost R$ 550 billion ($98.57 billion) over ten years. This projection threatens to undo much of the 2019 pension reform’s benefits.

Furthermore, increasing the minimum wage also pressures Brazil’s fiscal framework, which caps spending increases at 2.5% above inflation.

Experts warn that such changes could severely impact Social Security’s future. They stress that the 2019 reform was not intended to reduce INSS spending, which was expected to rise regardless.

The Ministry of Finance is exploring ways to offset these costs by adjusting spending policies to please the market.

Potential changes to the Fiscal Responsibility Law (LRF) could save the government at least R$ 20 billion ($3.58 billion) in health expenditures.

These adjustments could even reach R$23 billion ($4.12 billion), depending on specific calculations.

Economic analysts estimated that proposed changes could reduce the base for constitutional spending calculations by R$ 150 billion ($26.88 billion), saving about R$ 22.5 billion ($4.03 billion) annually.

Brazilian Market Update

Meanwhile, President Lula criticized the Central Bank‘s leadership, arguing that the president should appoint the Central Bank President.

Petrobras and Vale significantly boosted Ibovespa. Vale rose 1.48% due to higher iron ore prices in China, while Petrobras gained 1.52% following oil price increases.

Equatorial and Sabesp also saw significant gains, rising 4.37% and 4.24%, respectively.

Financial stocks dampened Ibovespa‘s overall gains. BB was down 1.31%, Bradesco decreased by 0.89%, and Itaú Unibanco dropped 0.48%.

BPAC11 rose 0.94%, remaining the most traded financial stock. Outside the index, Gol continues to face challenges.

The airline, undergoing Chapter 11 proceedings in the US, reported a net loss of R$ 371 million ($66.49 million) in May.

Net revenue reached R$ 1.27 billion ($227.60 million), while net debt stood at R$ 24.4 billion ($4.37 billion), causing shares to fall by 3.88% to R$ 0.99 ($0.18).
