Hurun Report Reveals Dramatic Decline in Chinese Billionaires Since 2021

China’s wealthy elite has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. The Hurun Rich List, which tracks the country’s wealthiest individuals, has shrunk for the third consecutive year.

This unprecedented decline reflects China’s economic challenges and struggling stock markets. The number of individuals on the list has dropped by 12% in the past year alone.

It now stands at just under 1,100 people. This represents a 25% decrease from the peak in 2021 when 1,465 individuals had fortunes of 5 billion yuan or more.

The decline in dollar billionaires is even more striking. From a high of 1,185 in 2021, the number has fallen to 753. This 36% drop outpaces the 10% depreciation of the renminbi against the dollar during the same period.

China’s real estate sector, once a powerhouse of wealth creation, has taken a hit. The Hurun list now features many new names. Half of the entrepreneurs listed weren’t there five years ago. Eight out of ten weren’t present a decade ago.

The old guard of property developers has given way to a new generation. Tech, new energy, consumer electronics, e-commerce, and health sectors now dominate the list. This shift reflects changing economic priorities and government policies.

The Rise of Zhang Yiming

Zhang Yiming, the 41-year-old founder of TikTok‘s parent company, now tops the list. His estimated fortune of $49 billion makes him China’s wealthiest person. This changing of the guard symbolizes the broader shifts in China’s economy.

The decline in billionaires reflects increased government control over the economy. A weak stock market, fueled by a persistent real estate crisis, has also played a role.
